Perhaps consider a refurbished CLI-8 based printer directly from Canon's eBay outlet? I haven't done that, but seems like a viable option based on several threads I've read.
I wish I would have known about Canon's eBay outlet it probably would have saved me some money since last night I bought a BRAND NEW Canon ip4300 a CLI-8 based printer on eBay.
Have a look at the negative feedback that has been left for the Canon refurbished printers before you decide it would have been a good idea.
ebay neg feedback here http://www.toolhaus.org/
What eBay User ID does one search on?

I've seen refurbed Canon printers on Canon's own website and on NewEgg.com. Where do I find them on eBay?

In the UK Ebay their user id is "canon_uk1" it could be that in the USA the factory outlet is run in a more professional manner, but 150 negs/neutral over a 12 month period is not the type of ebayer i would do business with.

is what they are selling in the UK

The Canon Outlet in Uk ebay is canon_uk1

Yes, they have neg feedback but I bought a MP640 and it came packed as a new item with new carts and no damage/scratches or anything worn that can see.

One has to be patient if a good price is to be had on ebay as they can go for silly money.

I try not to do negative speculation, but I wouldn't be surprised if some of the n.i.b. auctions involve refurbs from Canon. That could potentially be pretty lucrative, although I realize it would be outside eBay definitions.

Refurbs, seconds, open boxes, etc must be clearly identified in the US. To misrepresent an item that is not factory new has expensive legal issues awaiting.

All refurbs/reconditioned that I have seen in the US are in a plain jane box that clearly is NOT factory new.

bsanotrun and Redbrickman:

Thanks for the eBay ID. The IP4300 looks like a steal and the overall feedback is not rock bottom horrible for the volume sold, although prudence is still warranted.

Anyone know if there is a comparable Canon Outlet eBay ID in the US?

To get started trying my luck at refilling I want to order a small amount of ink so I'm looking at either Precision Colors http://stores.ebay.com/PrecisionCol...=12749085&_sid=98545621&_trksid=p4634.c0.m322 or Hobbicolors http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...akeTrack=true&ssPageName=VIP:watchlink:top:en is one less likely to clog the print head? Besides cost is there any reason to use one over the other (since I have been using inexpensive G&G cartridges it's obvious I'm not that picky)?

How large a bottle of ink would be required to refill a 5 cartridges set of PGI-5/CLI-8 four or five times?

I've watched several online videos on flushing virgin Canon cartridges and simply sticking the cartridge under running hot water seems to be the easiest but is it really necessary. If you do not flush and merely refill with ink will the colors look so bad it will stick out like a sore thumb I'm not that particular as long as it doesn't look terrible?

Do most of you use these clip-ons http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_tr...non+cartridge+clips&_sacat=See-All-Categories in order to have a stable base for cartridge refilling plus using for storage?

Are all plugs created equal for the PGI-5/CLI-8 cartridges http://cgi.ebay.com/Plugs-refilling.../140498450478?pt=BI_Toner&hash=item20b65c382e or http://www.inkjetreset.com/Plugs-&-Special-Orders.html

I've watched several online videos on how to remove the plug on Canon OEM cartridges for top filling and they all seem to point to heating up a safety pin, screw, etc. and then trying to stick/screw into the plug and removing. Even though this is kind of expensive would something like this work easier or would it even work at all? http://www.rjettek.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/75/products_id/1108

I realize I'm basically a newbie here but I would think using a squeeze bottle might be easier than using a syringe... I'm assuming you just transfer the whole ink bottle into one of these squeeze bottles. Even though these seem to be in the UK has anyone in the US ordered any of these I didn't try to buy them to see the cost of shipping or time involved? http://www.octoink.co.uk/categories/Refill-Tools{47}Kits/SquEasyFill-Kits/

The online videos I've watched all show the chip resetter being used after refilling a cartridge but doesn't this leave the chance of ink leaking onto the resetter, can you reset the cartridge before filling it?

Gday mate
I've just done my first refill with the precision colours refill kits & everything worked out fine after absorbing the excellent advice I got from these forums. I used the syringes supplied with the kit & with my IP 5000 (CLI6) I used the top fill method by heating the provided pin up with my cigarette lighter & carefully finding the centre of the OEM round plug & making a hole in it, I didn't go all the way through & even did a second heat up of the pin to make the hole a little bigger. I then used the provided small eyelet screw held with a small pair of pliers & screwed this into the hole I made, once the screw is well in the round plug I had to pull & cajole the plug to get it out. Once you have done one or two of these it gets a lot easier. I then drilled out this hole with a 5/32" drill so the provided plugs will push all the way in & the seem to create a excellent seal. To refill this way I used the precision colours clip ons which make the job so much easier, you can use the orange clips that came with your new cartridges by holding them in place with an elastic band. After you have done one refill you only have to remove the top replacement plugs so the second refill is very easy. I didn't bother to flush my cartridges out as I only have what's in the printer & I didn't want to leave the inside of the print head exposed for the hours it takes to flush & dry,so far all is well.Your cartridges in the IP 5000 are not chipped so you won't need a chip resetter you just put your full cartridges back into the printer & they show up as full. When you do have a printer with chipped cartridges it's best to reset them in the resetter before filling them with ink. I haven't used the refill bottles but I imagine they are more convenient to use than a syringe but be careful to fill up very slowly so you don't pressurise the cartridge & cause ink to be forced out, this applies to syringes also.

I do not recommend the Hobbicolors pigment black ink as it appears to behave just like the Inktec ink that clogged the purge system in about a dozen printers that I refilled for. I would recommend Precision Colors.

It takes about half an ounce to refill an empty CLI-8 or a full ounce to refill an empty PGI-5 so 2 and 4 oz. respectively should work for you.

Don't bother flushing your cartridges unless they have been contaminated.

If you refill via the German method, you won't have to use any clips on the cartridge outlets while you refill not will you have to worry about an air tight plug on the refill hole and if you refill the one set of cartridges that came with your printer as they each come empty, you won't have to store any extra cartridges.

I've never used squeeze bottles, I'm still using a syringe with a 2" blunt 18 gauge needle which seems perfectly adequate to me.

You can use a resetter either before or after you refill by any method. Of course if you use the top fill method you have to plug the refill hole before you remove the cap on the outlet port.

I highly recommend the German method over the top fill method, especially for a first-time refiller like you. Just make sure you use a good tape to cover over the refill hole. Have you seen my videos on refilling via the German method?

Thanks for posting that link again GH I was looking for it before I tried the German method but I couldn't find it. I had seen it before & I refilled my pro 9000 with the German method & I do prefer it to the top fill. I must have pushed the ink out of syringe too fast as some come out of the outlet but as soon as I eased up it stopped & gave me no further problems. I did leave the small hole uncovered but now I have found some good tape (Gaffer tape) & I have covered the hole just to be sure. I just cut out a tiny square which was a bit fiddly to put on but after seeing your video you just wrap the tape around the cartridge which looked much easier.
