but I'm giving up and moving on with a new printer.
Might be for the best. At some point you get to hating an inanimate object like a printer, and can never trust it again.

Perhaps consider a refurbished CLI-8 based printer directly from Canon's eBay outlet? I haven't done that, but seems like a viable option based on several threads I've read.

BUT !!!!!

If you don't use Canon oem carts and reputable ink, you're likely to encounter the same problems with the next printer. You can get virgin, empty Canon oem carts inexpensively. You don't have to build your cart inventory by purchasing retail.

I do have some questions about refilling so should I start a new thread?
Well, sure ... but your best bet is to use the NS search function and read those threads which seem close to applying. The same questions get asked over and over. (and the guy in my mirror has been chastised for that laziness more than once ... mea culpa  )

I wish I would have known about Canon's eBay outlet it probably would have saved me some money since last night I bought a BRAND NEW Canon ip4300 a CLI-8 based printer on eBay.

After I've purchased some OEM Canon PGI-5/CLI-8 empty cartridges is there a step by step tutorial preferably with pictures on prepping a OEM cartridge for Top refilling and what tools I might need?

I'm curious what you paid for it. In retrospect, I think I overpaid $50 for a faster but non-operational iP4500 (the model recommended by ghwellsjr). Probably could have walked away from the deal ("no thanks ... best wishes on getting it sold"), and checked a week or so later if it was still for sale. No power cord (!!! ???) and several empty carts.

Sorry for retelling this war story, but I took my own power cord and several refilled carts, and was able to demonstrate to myself it had an excellent nozzle check. If I were doing it over, I wouldn't have let the owner watch me bring the printer back to life, and verify that it worked fine. Out-smarted myself?

To answer your specific question ... yes there is a step-by-step tutorial, or at least details how a forum member in a similar situation to you went about it.

Oh, did you want a link to it? That's what the "Search" menu item is for :/

Ok ... I hesitate to recommend my own thread on an alternative way to purge carts and "consider the source". Read the entire thread, as more experienced forum members had revisions to some misconceptions on my part.

Also, use of a squeeze bottle like a mustard dispenser would probably work well, rather than the syringe + #1916 inlet port plug I used.

Also, it may not be strictly necessary to flush/purge carts , but imo is "best practice" for virgin empties from an unknown source.

Another factor is that if you flush carts, that pretty much implies you remove the plastic ball in the inlet port, which also has a learning curve. And if you do that, German refilling may be impacted negatively as the very important reservoir side top seal has been compromised.

"The ankle bone's connected to the shin bone ... " :/ One decision can be a fork in the road which resticts subsequent options.

If you decide to proceed with German refilling, I would consider an abbreviated mini-flush rather than removing the plastic ball.

I paid $201.50 plus shipping which was maybe too much but I needed a new printer really bad and I didn't want a newer model with smaller cartridges.

NO! I was only kidding. Hence the winking emoticon => ;). I have no idea who was bidding against you and I doubt it was ghwellsjr since he seems to have more printers than Best Buy.

It's a running gag I have with ghwellsjr. He nearly strokes out whenever I post that. But that's all part of my dastardly plan. If he gets to heaven before I do I hope to inherit one of his many printers. :p (I'm kidding again!)

After you do a cleaning and you get a good nozzle check, instead of printing a photo, what happens if you do several more nozzle checks, like maybe ten waiting a minute between each one.
I'm curious why you advocate waiting a minute between nozzle checks? Why not as fast as you can make them, perhaps 4 on front and back? I ask this because I would think that a nozzle check uses such a small amount of ink that it is very, very unlikely to cause problems. The ROI and risk/reward seems in favor of doing them quickly, if ink flow is the issue.

Have a look at the negative feedback that has been left for the Canon refurbished printers before you decide it would have been a good idea.
