What about a second-hand IP5300? It uses the same cartridges
Any CLl-8 cartridge printer is well worth getting, using and keeping it from landfill; they are the least troublesome printers of all. :)

The iP5300 is also worth getting, if it is in a good condition. It is a PGI-5/CLI-8 printer and it uses the same QY6-0067/0075 print head as the iP4500. Other printers that use this print head are MP610, MP810 and MX850.

1)My ip4300 still prints fine with dye ink, so I could just buy a cheap laser printer for text and continue using the IP4300 for CD\DVD and pictures
There is a work around that will allow you to use the CLI-8 Bk for text printing on plain paper. Change the media setting to matte photo paper. This will force the use of dye black instead of pigment black. Printing will be slower due to the smaller length of the dye nozzle set compared to the length of the pigment nozzle set. You will of course lose the benefits of the pigment printing on plain paper, but the documents will still look nice,

I already knew the trick but "Repetita Iuvant". ;)

The drawback, apart the very low speed as PeterBJ says, is that there is no draft quality mode available (only Standard and Best) so the printer will dampen too much the paper and printing on each side will be a little messy.

In scenario 1, I will buy a laser anyway, because this little trick is fine just for random text printing, but when printing a lot it will take ages and printer text is not as water resistent as printing with pigment ink (PGBK)

Update: I bought two second hand printers in working condition, an IP5300 and an MP610. They don't share the same printhead as the IP4300 but at least can continue using PGI-5/CLI-8 cartridges and should have a slightly better quality and be faster

They have just been shipped, will let you know as soon as they arrive home.

The MP610 has just arrived but the scanner glass broke during transport.

Anyone knows if I can change myself the glass with another one? I will open another thread for this
