Not exactly difficult, but cumbersome. Just keep the intake below the liquid level in a trap. If you want to pump out 90% of the air, then you will need 10 times as much liquid as the volume of air that you are pumping. If you start with enough water and put valves in the right places, it should work. But you're right. If you use the wrong kind of pump, it's all very Mickey Mouse.
