Thank you for your information and for pointing me towards the FAQ. It was most remiss of me not to consult this section. It is fascinating information.
I have copied some text from the FAQ which helps to answer my question.
The surprise I found was that The black pigment ink...
Can someone fully explain the functions of the Canon Pigment & Photo Black cartridges.
I am aware that the pigment black is used to print documents but is the photo black isolated during these prints?
I thought that I had read somewhere that the photo black is used during duplex printing...
I'm from the UK and I've been using Hobbicolors ink for some time but with the poor exchange rate and the worry over Customs & PO hitting you with VAT and collection rates, I'm attracted to purchasing from the UK
Octoink (www.octoink.co.uk) are selling image specialists ink at reasonable...
Like jflan I use home made cleaning cartridges but filled with heated water or whatever mixture you prefer. I have found that a heated (not boiling) solution often breaks down the dried ink.
I'm not sure you're correct in this. I ordered something under 30 + postage from Hobbicolors (Can't remember the exact amount) and was charged 2 customs duty. However, the big stinger was that the Post Office charge you 10 for collecting the customs charge. On top of that you have to go the P.O...

Don't think they ship outside UK & Germany but shows that a resetter is on its way...
I have always bought ink from Hobbicolors in the States. However with the weak pound and customs charges ( I was hit with a 12 customs & P.O charge last time I ordered) I wondered if anyone had any alternatives to Hobbicolors in the UK. Ebay offers alternatives but they look like cheap Chinese...

Thanks very much for your help. I took your advice and removed the cover and when I re-fitted it I found that by propping up the outlet tray the printer worked again. Thought it was something to do with the output tray hinges and your search seems to have found the solution. Thank you...
My Ip4500 refuses to print and i get the following message "document printing cannot be executed because the paper output tray is closed. Open the paper output tray. Printing will resume".
However, the paper tray is open. There are two retractable buttons on the paper tray front edge which I...
This forum is brilliant for anyone who has any interest in printers. However, there comes a time when our printers give us some problems. I only have experience of Canon printers so I don't know whether my experiences are of any value to owners of other printers. However, clogged prinheads must...
Someone from this forum e-mailed me about where to get the RedSetter for 10 in UK. Unfortunately I accidently deleted it and cannot reply direct. It's available for 10.06 from www.ink.co.uk.
You need to go to www.ebay.com & search for Hobbicolors (not Hobbicolours as in UK). I always use Hobbicolors which is still the best value,IMO, even if the exchange rate is rubbish right now. However make sure your order is less than 18 ex delivery as you could hit with import VAT & a PO...
You can refill these carts. Do a Google for info e.g. http://www.druckerpatronentankstellen.de/product_info.php?language=en&products_id=50667.
Remember though you'll lose ink monitoring and the new carts have less capacity than the cli-8 ones so keep an eye on them.
Canon IP3500 or IP4500 would suit your purpose if you can get hold of one (Try a Google search, or Ebay). Stay clear of the new Canons (smaller ink cartridges & no chip resetter available)
