My Ip4500 refuses to print and i get the following message "document printing cannot be executed because the paper output tray is closed. Open the paper output tray. Printing will resume".

However, the paper tray is open. There are two retractable buttons on the paper tray front edge which I presume has something to do with the problem. However neither are stuck and seem to be working O.K.

Anyone any ideas how to solve this problem or is the printer for the scrap heap?

Don't scrap it!

There's a fix for this, I can't remember where I saw it, but it's not a hard one. Take the chasis off to see what you can see. Sorry I couldn't be more specific, but I am positive i ran across a solution for this exact problem in my travels.

Thanks very much for your help. I took your advice and removed the cover and when I re-fitted it I found that by propping up the outlet tray the printer worked again. Thought it was something to do with the output tray hinges and your search seems to have found the solution. Thank you very much for helping to save my IP4500

Epson, Canon, HP... A "few"
If it's what I think it is there's a sensor in the right side of the printer (as you look at the front)... If this gets broken or the tab inside is damaged the sensor will not work.

I had to take apart an iP4300 with this problem and it was a case of glueing the broken tab back into position to resolve the problem... Unfortunately I don't have pictures and can't remember exactly what was busted so not the most informative post for me.

What I can add though is that I doubled up some corrugated cardboard so that the underside papertray could stick out and support the output tray to stop the problem recurring (ie: child leaning on the output tray and snapping off the tab/part).

Hope that helps.
