WIN 10 Update

I have now installed the Anniversary Update on my laptop. It took a couple of tries. Clicking "Update and restart" started the process, but it ground to a halt at 69%. Then the update program started to roll back the part of the updates that were successfully installed. Further attempts to update and restart just restarted the computer. But settings-> Update and security->Windows Update (or what the items might be called in English) allowed a new attempt that was sucessful.

After the update my printers were deleted, only the virtual printers that are part of Windows or Microsoft office were left:

some programs were also deactivated, they were not deleted:

"Ikke tilgængelig" means "Not accessible" in English. Highlighting these programs/drivers only allows you to remove them "Fjern" = "Remove" The greyed out "Rediger" means "Edit".

But the printers could be reinstalled via plug and play, and the "Canon CD Label Print" and "Canon Inkjet Printer Driver Add-On Module" that are needed for CD were reactivated after reinstalling the MP800.

It looks like mikling is right. I have installed the Desktop Gadgets from Win Vista and 7, as I like the analog clock, the calendar and the CPU/RAM meters. This program was also deactivated and could not be restarted or reinstalled. but after removing the program I could reinstall it. I think my Canon drivers and the desktop gadget program are unsigned.

I will say this was inconvenient, but not disastrous. But I consider going back to Win 7. I have got two Win 7 keys for the computer. One that was written by the Win 7 Restore DVD and another key on a sticker on the computer. If the first key has been cancelled by Microsoft when upgrading to Win 10, I think the second will be OK for activation. But I will install Win 7 on another harddisk in case I cannot activate it.

@PeterBJ : did you do the original Win 10 installation as a fresh install, or as an update ?

I had a lot of problems too with programs and devices, until I did a new install (at least 6 months ago).
Anniversary update was smooth on this machine.

It seems to me that with an upgrade a lot of WIN7, 8 and 8.1 code remains.
What I observed too (in other upgrades) that for common devices as the video driver, touchpad etc that it takes some time and restarts before Win10 gets everything fixed (no touchpad, fixed after reboot). The drivers come also from Microsoft and not from Nvidia or whatever.
Updates are continuous.

Windows 10 installation, like other Windows OS installations, may appear to stop but in reality has not and is just taking its own sweet time. What prompted you to restart the process?

What do you mean by "roll back"? Was windows deleting the successful updates?

Further attempts to update and restart just restarted the computer.

Multiple warm boots are required for installation of Win 10. How do you know the installation process crapped out and required you to click anew on Windows Update?

My Canon MP830 printer remained installed and working properly after the Anniversary Update. It is a puzzler why some people have the issue you and Emulator did!

@palombian The Win 10 install was an upgrade from Win 7.

@stratman When the update process was 69% complete, the blue screen gave a message that translates to "Could not finish the update process. Now removing installed components". So yes, Windows was deleting the successful part of the update. I do know that several restarts takes place during an install/upgrade. The computer restarted several times during the successful update/upgrade.

I upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 and then, weeks later, to the Anniversary update. I had to reinstall my Canon MP830 and CCleaner. Everything else ported over.

The only Win 10 issue I experienced was Microsoft automatically changed my associations for image/video extensions several times back to their native applications instead of my (free) third party preference Media Player Classic application that comes with K-Lite Mega Codec Pack.

Maybe I bypassed some issues because I didn't upgrade to Windows 10 (from Windows 8.1) until the last week it was offered free this past July, nearly one since it first rolled out.

True. I use Total Uninstall when installing and uninstalling applications. It saves a list of every change, addition and deletion during the installation process so that when you uninstall the app it cleans up better than most every program's own uninstall routing. If file and folder structure were changed in the new Win 10 OS then the report of file/folder "not found" during an uninstall of a program installed previously on my old Win 8.1 OS would occur. It does not (so far).

Sounds like the dreaded network transmission error discussed in posts #11 and #12 in this thread.

Do you have either KB3193494 or KB3189866 updates in your Update History list (in the Update & History Settings page)? The latter is the original update that's caused people trouble and the former is the fix.

Unlike in older Windows versions I cannot find a detailed W10 update history list. This is the only list I can find is this ("Indstillinger" = "Settings"), is there a more detailed Update & History Settings page available, if so please where?

Clicking the blue link under KB3176936 opens this webpage, which I think shows what is available, not what actually is installed. I don't know if the link to this help page in Danish will work outside Denmark or on a US English W10 computer. On this page both KB3193494 and KB3189866 are listed plus more. But I don't know if these updates were installed or not. Here is the list from the webpage. Does the checkmarks mean installed and did Microsoft scan my laptop to see what updates were necessary?

That is the list. You have Windows 10 Anniversary upgrade (which is like a whole new operating system) and then two subsequent updates successfully completed. Everything that came before the Anniversary update is no longer listed.

I believe you are correct in that more updates await you, including the fixed KB3193494 update discussed in this thread earlier.

Performance wise I did see no difference between WIN10 and 8.1.
Most interesting enhancement in both, on older PC's, is the hibernation.
My wife's 2009 Dell laptop now starts up in 15 seconds. See no reason for a SSD.
