I suggest you to obtain a refurbished CLI-8/PGI-5 based printer of the older generation or you might even want to get a Canon i9900 or 8500 printer without chips. Stay away from the latest CLI-521/221 and PGI-520/220 based printers. Not only the cartridges are smaller, but the printer tends to execute more than necessary cleaning cycles to drain the ink into the waste ink pads.

I think it should still be possible to grab a (used/refurbished) Canon IP6600D or IP4200/4300/4500/5200/5300 printer somehow on the internet.

His email address indicates he is in the UK.

I would suggest that you look for a used printer that uses BCI-6 cartridges, the iP4000 being the best if you want a smaller printer than the all-in-one MP780. A lot of people are selling these printers right now because they want wireless built-in or some other lame excuse. Just make sure the printer does a perfect nozzle check.

In our country we use "don't end cartridges" in Printer it gives 10 times more output than standard cartridges and also we can refill this cartridges with ourselves in our offices or homes.

I'm in the US and have the same question. I have a newly dead Epson Stylus Photo RX620 that an Epson tech told me probably has a "fried printhead" from using non-OEM cartridges. I replaced the Light magenta and suddenly it didn't recognize any of the inks. I tried re-booting the printer, replacing the inks again and again and no success. I have another printer, a Stylus Photo RX595 (this one was used, cheap and prints right on white CDs) that has its original Epson inks in it, but I'll need to be replacing some or all soon--What to do?

I just need a printer that can print decent photos and day-to-day color printing on plain paper and heavy cardstock. We have a Dell 1110 laser printer for black printing. I don't need wireless, and an all-in-one would also be helpful as I do a lot of scanning.

Any recommendations?

My experience is, if none of the cartridges are recognized, and were previously, then it is the Logic Board that has expired, not the print head.

Is it difficult/expensive to replace that part?

The easiest canon printers to refill are the older ones with BCI cartridges, because ink status works without chips.
As pharmacist says, I would prefer a refurbished CLI-8/PGI-5 printer over CLI-521, because the cartridges are bigger (suspecting one-milliliter-cartridges in the next models...)
Beside an ip4000 I have an epson r285 (similar to p50) with refillable acr (auto reset chips) cartridges. If you are looking for these, be sure to get the latest generation of empty refillable cartridges for easy refilling without vacuum.

See post #4. Look on craigslist for an MP780.

If you find one, I can give you a list of tests that you can perform to make sure it is in top-notch condition.
