I was first able to view this most famous and beautiful inscrutable smile in spring, 1961. As I recall, the only barrier was a velvet rope line just feet from the painting. Again in spring, 1966, my recollection was that the view was unimpeded by a fixed rail or bullet-proof glass. Fortunately, these, and subsequent trips to Paris were at times other than the crush of tourist season, so there was no need to rush through any museum.
