- Epson D1070, Epson photo 2200
I heard about this forum while watching printhead cleaning videos. I was given an Epson Stylus Photo D2200 that sat for 5 years since last used, along with a bunch of paper and several extra ink cartridges. I don't have a wide format printer, so I this one would be somewhat handy if it could be refurbished.
I had no expectations and my first attempt to print produced a blank page. However, after using the paper towel soaked in windex trick, several colors were firing through some of the nozzles. Repeated cleanings gradually produced additional nozzles working. Two colors; Magenta and Yellow stubbornly refused to fire. The yellow intake had dried ink around it which i was able to gradually dissolve and remove.
I tried the syringe technique to push cleaning fluid through the print head, but my 1/8" plastic tube was too stiff or loose on the inlet port. Cleaning fluid leaked out rather than being pushed through. I got some 1/8" latex tubing and that sealed well on the inlet ports. I was able to push fluid through two of my troublesome colors but not through the yellow port. Yellow remains completely clogged.
After a week of intermittent effort, 6 of 7 colors work perfectly. The yellow color remains blank. Both black inks work fine, so I can do black and white prints. That is great as I have a large collection of black and white negatives and files that I could print.
I don't have any great expectation that the yellow nozzles can be unplugged, but I will keep applying fluid to the inlet and soaking the outlets for awhile to see if the dried ink starts dissolving. I do often see yellow spots on my soaked paper towels under the print head. Some dissolving of yellow ink is occurring.
My other printer is an Epson Surelab D1070, which is sweet. it uses roll paper. I mostly print 8x10 and 8x20 photos with it. My photo business is seasonal, but when I am busy I can print several hundred prints a week. Oddly, now that I am using the Epson print utility with the D2200, it is no longer available for my D1070. That is a problem that i need to solve. My computer is an Apple MacMini with the M1 chip. I love the hardware but am often very frustrated with the MacOS.
I used a Fujifilm FrontierS DX100 for the same purpose until something gave out last year. i purchased the Epson D1070 after the Fuji gave out.
Before that, I had an Epson Artisan 730, which produced very nice prints, but I seldom used it after I got the Fuji. I recycled it after the print head clogged. If I had known about good bulk ink refills, I might have tried cleaning the head better and kept it.
I also owned a used Kodak D500 ink transfer printer for several years until Kodak no longer supported it. It was an interesting printer, but I had to check the color registration every 50 prints or so.
