My parents are serious 12 o'clock flashers and they will definitely forget to check ink levels on regular bases if not prompted by printer driver. Are there any refillable cartridges for Pixima MG6220 which track ink level and require manual reset upon refill?

Thanks ahead

The MG6220 is only a new printer so therefore youre stuck with using only OEM cartridges for the foreseeable future.

They are fitted with a new design cartridge and chip so it will take some time to figure them out and discover a workaround,
in the mean time just try to enjoy your new printer sorry..

according to Amazon, as well as printer box contents, the printer uses 225/226 cartridge set (1+5). also i see refillable carts for sale here:
amazon.com/ND-Refillable-Cartridges-PGI-225-CLI-226/dp/B007RTP7GY/

and a separate chip resetter here:
amazon.com/gp/product/B0057QIBYY/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00

Am i missing something? It seems the refilling setup for this printer is somewhat mature...

Sorry I mistook it for the MG6350 which uses the 250/251 carts and not your MG6220.:barnie

Your best option for refilling the 225/226 (Opaque) cartridges is to replace them with a set of empty OEM 221/220 +1 extra for grey
(Semi Opaque) swap the chips and to get a resetter for the 225/226 OEM chip.

It would be advisable not to use any 3rd party compatible cartridges for refilling as they are nowhere near as reliable as the OEMs.
Try Precisioncolor for any if not all of your requirements to start refilling your Canon cartridges.

If you need any tutorials on the refilling methods try these..

Thanks for the reply.
What is the "not reliable" part of the compatible cartridges?

I just pulled a trigger on 3 sets of these:
amazon.com/gp/product/B007VGM090/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00

I've read reviews that some of these carts are not recognized by printer. My hope was to get 2 sets worth of recognized carts, which i can refill / reset for my parents once in a blue moon. I also bought the 225/226 usb powered resetter. If i go with the 221/220 carts and swap the oem chips off 225/226 to them then i need to buy new sets of 225/226 to have couple total sets in circulation... Sorry, i am a newb with cannon printers, i use epson 3880 at home.

End goal is to have 2-3 sets of cartridges which track ink level and can be reset/refilled by me.

Also, is there a preferred ink manufacturer for this ink set? I refill my 3880 with cone and/or inkowl inks, since they are pigment and tend to have best light fastness/gamut. What i do not know is the relative "ratings/archivability" of 3rd party ink sets for 225/226 canon carts.

All of them! LOL
You just never know when they will starve the head from ink. You Mom and Pop would end up with a fried head after not too long.
OEM carts are the most reliable as far as properly sealing against the head ink port and more importantly maintaing a good and STEADY flow of ink. Which refillables are NOT known to do. I am not saying they will not work but it's like playing Russian Roulette with your print head. No offense to any of our Russian Members. It's just an old phrase.

You purchased Compatible carts, not refillable ones, which are even less reliable and should not even be refilled. Now realistically, what would you realistically expect from a full set of these carts for $7????

A follow up question:
is the clear plastic on 220/221 the only advantage to refilling 225/226 directly?

Well, the fact that the 225/226 are completely opaque, I would say yes.
You really need to see the level of ink as you refill. The experts here can work around that but I am thinking of what would be easiest and most reliable for your Mom and Dad. You want to provide them the most trouble free method.

You top fill these following methods found here. I top fill my CLI-9 carts. Attache the original orange clip with a rubber bandthen you have to remove the original factory seal ball, inject ink to about 1/5 from the top. Reseal the hole with the proper plug. reset and reinstall. I usually have a ful set waiting on standby so that there aren't any long interruptions when one cart runs out.
There is a lot more expert information here from others. I am an Epson guy, but do own Canon 9000 and 9500 MKII.

Thanks for the reply.
Are there any gotchas with resetting empty 225/226 chips? For example epson 3880s can only be reset if above 15%.
I'll probably have parents buy OEM carts for couple rounds and when i have several sets of 225/226 chips i'll do the 220/221 conversion.
