Having to feed paper manually, sheet-by-sheet on Canon Inkjet MG6450

Does anyone find with these (or similar) printers that the paper feed is tricky? I almost always end up having to laboriously feed the paper sheet by sheet to get the roller to catch it, meaning that I can't leave the printer alone to finish a job and have to sit by it. Has anyone any solution?

Maybe the pickup rollers have lost the grip due to paper dust. Cleaning them might then make the printer work again. Here is a thread about a similar problem.

This could explain why it is important the rollers are free from paper dust or why a printer that will not pick up paper from a half filled cassette can do it if the cassette is topped up.

If you can buy a new printer for not much more than a set of OEM carts, probably Canon doesn't makes any profit, but they won't loose much money either. Meaning : cheap build = low duty and low reliability on a mid term basis.
These entry models are targeted at the casual user who makes a few scans and prints barely 500-1000 pages/year. Try to print several thousands of pages/month and don't be surprised if the mechanics of the printer bite the dust in no time.

You’ve hit the nail right on the head, when it comes time to replace the carts, it’s as cheap to buy a new printer, why bother trying to fix anything..

I've printed about 1800 in total on mine since purchase in 2014 so on average not even 500 a year, more like 250. I am stubborn and don't like replacing hardware unless absolutely necessary. But it is not a suitable printer for bulk jobs at the best of times.

Well, what do you know ?. My brother brought me yesterday his MG5750, because 90% of times it didn't feed the paper and then I remembered this thread. I tried, with some skepticism, the 'sponge fix' pointed by dublin123, and it worked !
