Dye or pigment inks for my new Epson WF7710

Hello,

I've just bought a WF7710 and want to use ARC cartridges. The question is dye or pigment, I want to test if I can get good results with dye ink first and thought of starting with the Epson ET-7700 inks 106 YMC and 105 for pigment black.
Will this combination work on my printer or are there better dye inks to use?

I think it depends on what do you want to print with the device and on what kind of medium.
The 106 inks for the 7700 are better dye inks than your regular dye used in the L series for examples, because they are Claria-type dyes. So their main use is photographic printing. The set also contains a photographic dye Black, also coded 106. If you want to use the 106 colours and use the device for photographic printing, I think that Black would be better suited to your needs than the 105 pigment. So, like i said above, you should first decide what do you want to print with the device and on what kind of medium. Then you can choose accordingly

Thanks for the information, I was not aware that there is also a 106 black dye ink. I want to use the printer for normal office jobs mainly BW and for photographic printing.
The quality of the office prints is not so important to me and I want to start with dye inks because they are much cheaper as pigment inks. I have read your thread and what inks you are using for your printer?

I am using durabrite compatible pigments from InkTec. They are good, just not very good/excellent . For office jobs pigments work good because they are fade/water/mechanical action resistant compared to dye inks. The Claria dyes are about 3-4x better than the normal dyes as regards fading and water/mechanical resistance, pigments are better than Claria under the same aspects. On the other hand the 106 photo black Claria dye will give greater gamut overall and especially in the shadows when printing photos. Also consider the type of paper you will be using. The photo black dye gives better results on glossy, the pigment black I suppose it's better on matte/plain papers. There is a very good thread here by Ink Stained Fingers regarding the ET 7750 , it's inks and prints, which you can read to see how the 106 /105 fare. I don't know if running those inks instead of Durabrite's will clog the printer/cause any trouble they being not pigments as the originals are. But I suspect they won't cause any trouble...

do you really have a significant price difference between the bottled Durabrite inks for the WF7710 and the 105/106 type inks ? If you are not specifically after photo printing with dye inks I would recommend to stay with the Durabrite inks as @BlackSea comments above as well.

I’m using Precision Colors PCDB pigment inks in my 7210 quite happily. I find them to be, to me, better color wise than the OEM inks: The OEM black seemed a bit brown, and if left to its own devices the photos printed seemed to have a cyan-ish hue.

I am printing on matte paper.

So PCDB, custom profile, and matte paper works for me.

Thanks for the advices and so I've ordered OCP inks from the K3 line for the SC-P600 YMC with PK for first tests. I will try both gloss and matt paper at first Tecco PM230 and PL285 Luster. My concern are the problems with bronzing and gloss differential for the luster paper therefore my first intend to use dye inks.

I must admit that I was not happy with the OCP pigment inks in the past - bronzing - and not with the InkTec inks either, I found the precisioncolors HD pigment inks showing better performance, but since this all comes with a great level of personal judgement I'm interested in your comments.

I'd suggest you also get a x-rite ColorMunki Photo and make your own profiles since you are self-loading ink. The new version of the device's software does a really good job with B&W images too. Makes the ordeal a lot easier and faster too.

I've been using BCH Technologies dye ink for a while and so far so good. I need to dilute the magenta and cyan with their clear dye ink for use as a light magenta and light cyan in one of my Epson 3880s. A 500ml bottle is $19.93 now and much cheaper than OEM. They have pigment as well which may be my next switch. I am moving away from Inkjet Mall (Jon Cone) inks as it was pretty expensive and their cheaper dye faded really fast in a few days in sunlight, other than his PK Black which is really black.

Yes, those inks are pretty pricey, the black is very good but that would not justify to use all their other inks as well.
Ref: dye fading - yes, I found their inks not performing much better than other 3rd party dye inks - the only well performing dye inks are the Epson and Fujifilm dye inks for the Drylab/Surelab printers and the Epson 106 inks for the ET-106, the choices are small but still better than for Canon users - there are no good alternatives to the Chromalife inks in regards to fading at all .
