Well I at least convinced Red River paper. An email from them:

Thanks for the work you’ve done. The profiles are made to work with the Matte Photo Paper media setting which uses the Photo Black ink. Even if you switch to the fine art setting using Matte Black ink, the profile will still not perform well.

We are deciding if we should make these new profiles in-house or via our profile partner Chromix. A decision should be reached soon and we’ll get started.

I understand Dredmanlaw's problem and I think I might know why it happens. I have both the X-Rite i1 and Datacolor profile devices and one of the biggest issues for me is to be able to print out the patch targets to A4 sheets (my small work space means I can't print targets to larger sheets) given the ridiculous Canon margin limitation when selecting Fine Art as the media type. The targets don't print properly. I have found a way to tailor the target patch size with the X-Rite targets in order to be able to use the i1 with FA set as media, which means having to print to more sheets of paper, but with the Datacolor device that's just not possible. I would imagine that the paper manufacturers are selecting Matte paper as media type to get around the margin issue and be able to print to A4 sheets for profiling. Just a guess on my part since target size shouldn't be such an issue for them.

What we ideally need is for some hacker genius to crack open the Canon print driver and rewrite the margin restriction for FA media as it doesn't seem like Canon want to know!!

So I am using the Precision color inkset. It look pretty good with the Canon profiles on canon luster paper, which is practically free to try. When I use the Precision color d50 icc profile with my calibrated monitor, the deep blues are purple. When I switch back to the Canon profiles the blue go back pretty close to the way it was with OEM ink. So could it be that the print head has not flushed out the OEM ink yet? I have printed about 10 8x10s. I also used the method to extract the ink from the carts before I refilled. Any ideas?

@Dredmanlaw, If you’re satisfy with the print quality on the Canon luster paper then you don’t need do anything, leave well enough alone I reckon. :)

Canon print heads holds very little ink inside them so when you put in a fresh cartridge any remaining ink will be flushed out of it instantly so there will be no cross contamination between the two inks..

Thanks for that answer on the flushing of the print heads. I can't imagine that the precision colors icm is so far off. I must be doing something wrong. I will try the d65 profile.

All of them! LOL
Yes the head will be flushed readily of any remaining inks but unless you began with pristine flushed carts before you loaded them with the PC inkset for the PRO-10 you will still be printing with some remnants of OEM inks as the upper sponge will tenaciously retain remains of the original ink.

MIKE created those profiles after MUCH work and I believe they should be very good. I've tried some profiles he made for the new PRO-100 and other ink sets still in the works for EPSON printers and they were outstanding.

The pro 10 carts once empty are “Empty” there is no remaining ink left inside them and no sponge either, they are exactly the same as the Pro 9500 carts.. !

It’s very easy to get things wrong when dealing with profiles, there are many variables to watch out for, if any of your setting are incorrect then your results will reflect this, double check your steps again..

Of course. Dumb me, I missed the part about that it was the PRO-10! So yes, that should not happen.
But did he completely flush out the carts?

Yes. The pro-10. I completely flushed the carts according to Mike's instructions. It's strange that the color shift is there when I use his profiles. I read elsewhere that his profiles are more accurate than the canon profiles, but I can drop an eye dropper and see that there is no red in the portion that is printing purple. See example. I have not tried the d65 profile yet. Overall the inkset is surprisingly close to Canon's, and I might not notice the difference if I couldn't compare photos when I am using the OEM profile for the paper. The only difference I am seeing is that the reds are slightly duller. I was hoping that the correct profile would pop them a tad.

Canon profile on left Precision colors on the right. Precision colors inkset on both. I know this is a terrible way to evaluate the color. Notice the left image looks great.

Oh and I have checked several times and each time to ensure that the media is correct and that the proper profile is being applied. That was my first thought too.

Ok I tried the d65 profile. Same issue.
