Epson 3880. Canon Pro 9000,
Well I looked at the discounted 3880 prices and the idea had crossed my mind, particularly because @3dogs has one, but then again I thought have you anywhere to put it, how often would you use it, would anyone miss any of your photos, is it much better than the 9000II for the printing you are doing, etc etc????? -------and I could not convince myself on any of the counts.:old

Please (just this time) excuse the lengthy waffle....you be the judge of its worth.

I was just plain lucky I guess. My printer, a Canon Pixima MP810 is limited to A4 and was not able to handle any of the heavy Art papers I wanted to play with. That constraint frustrated my "I want" node to the point where I started to look on the web for information on printers and printing. Luck had it that a link brought me to this site and @TheHat, who at that time was wrestling with refilling a Canon Pro1 cart. Other sites took me to Epson and the 3800 and the new 3880 a printer that appeared to be way out of my price range and well outside what I wanted to print.

I would skip the chronicle of events except for the outcome and to say that I took a chance drive down to the City of Melbourne to a camera shop I had haunted for some time without purchasing much in return for loads of good information the gave me for free. On this day I visited they took a call telling them that the 3880 they had brought in for a Customer Order was not required as they had decided on a 4900 printer instead.

The Staff had tried unsuccessfully for two years to get me to commit to a 3800 then 3880 and failed. I had no space, no need and no use for such a big powerful printer....
This time I walked away with a 3880 for a fraction of the retail price...still with the afore criteria in play! I really had neither the space nore the real need for such a monster. I took it home hooked it up to my then grotty gaming computer and a very basic monitor....only thing I actually had going for me was Lightroom 2, Photoshop and a i1 Basic screen profiler. Installed the first of the two OEM ink sets supplied fearfully aware of the cost (A$980) for a replacement set. Set the whole lot up to print. profiled the screen installed the supplied ICC profile and printed on some Canon A4 Matte paper I had at hand.

What I saw drew me into printing and had me pestering @jtoolman for more and more information. @Emulator I write this verbose response for just one reason... that first pigment print gave me back SO much...........I cant find the right words but just looking at it showed ME, the inside ME, what it was that was in this Printer, ink and paper that I could now access. I then tossed in a sheet of Ilford Art Matte, and using the same profile printed an A4 of one of the Outback scenes.

If I had only that one print to show for the money spent on a 5DII, Eizo CG screen, the printer and the Cone ink, it would be worth it to me.

Had I taken delivery of the Canon Pro 1 I had on order at the time I would not be printing today full stop!!. I will not go into the whys I have no need to start or continue a Brand War, just leave it at this, had I taken delivery then, the cost of replacement Pro 1 Inks alone would have been sufficient to be the final nail in the coffin without anything else.

Staying on the track I want to set out for you, its not about having the space, its not even about having a real NEED for such a printer, or a practical use for the output from it, its about having a machine that actually puts in your hand a visual tactile output of a piece of work you spent a bucket of money already to create within the excellent camera and lenses you bought to fulfill a vision/dream/imagining you had, of such quality that you say........YES! a thousand time YES!

I MADE THAT!! and by Jove that IS what I dreamed............. finally!!

Well said and put @3dogs, I reckon we have @Emulator surrounded now, incidentally when I bought my Pro 1, it wasn’t my finest hour because it didn’t do what I had intended..:hit

Thanks guys for all the effort you have put into your replies, much appreciated. Dare I say I am still not convinced; that really you aren't only creating a load more problems for yourself, without much benefit.:hide

@Emulator...
You got WiFi on that 7DII of yours? Sounds like your plan is to take up position on that easy chair in the sitting room overlooking the ranch shoot birds,download direct to the printer (next to you on its own coffee table) and print entries for the upcoming comp!! :gig:gig:gig
