There are some workarounds..sort of., though not as convenient.

1. Install Windows 10 LTSC (if you have access to licensing for it). It's guaranteed to work longer.

2. Use a print server of some sort, maybe a cheap Linux box?

good news, made some progress. was able to get a hold of a W11 laptop.

here was what worked for me:
- i downloaded the most recent drivers, some were W8, some W10
- set each up to run in compatibility mode
- run each as admin

tested using W11 laptop
- MX870 works with just run as admin
- MP980 works with just runs as admin, needed to connect USB, first, then reinstall to get WIFI
- PRO100 - not tested, but should work given that it has a W10 driver
- MX700 works with just runs as admin, needed to connect USB, first, then reinstall to get ETHERNET

i tested out printing, worked fine, did not test out scanning or faxing

was glad to find out that my horde of several 15-18 year old printers can still be used(easily refilled) and they did not become boat anchors

latest refill count is 2,153 ink carts over 18 years
