Hi Guys,

This is my first post and the reason I landed here is because I am looking for some answers in the hope I can repair my Canon MP760. I want to try to repair it because it has been an excellent printer and the only hiccup I have had is now. It comes up with the error message "The type of print head is not correct. Install correct print head":(.
I have cleaned the print head, checked other "remedies" in the manual and through switching it off and on managed to get it printing on a couple of occasions just doing test stuff but then comes up with the alarm. Pretty sure the logic (electronics) side is OK so will try to source out a new print head or if I can be as lucky as Frankd1 get a secondhand unit for $20. Have to be pretty lucky though I guess and out here in Australia they are a little more expensive! Still a secondhand printer is a good answer.

Has anyone else experienced this error message? What do you think Inkjet Master? Cheers!

The message indicating the wrong print head (or cartridge) usually indicates that the print head is permanently defective. However, in some cases, especially when the message sometimes goes away, you can subject the print head to a thorough cleaning, which I will explain in a minute, and get it to work continuously again.

Here's what you can try:
Remove all the ink cartridges.
Do a deep head cleaning.
Do a nozzle check.
Repeat until nothing prints on the nozzle check.
Remove the print head.
Rinse the print head under clean warm (not hot) tap water until no more ink come out. This will take a long time.
Submerge it in a window cleaner or other light soapy solution for a week.
Rinse the print head under clean warm (not hot) tap water.
Submerge the print head in distilled water for a couple days.
Dry the print head as well as you can.
Let the print head sit in a warm spot for at least two days to get the internals dry.
Put it back in the printer but do not install the ink cartridges.
Hit the reset button if it asks you if want to do an auto align.
See if the error message comes up.
Leave the power on for a day then turn it off overnight and try again looking for that dreaded error message.
If you get lucky and the error message never comes up, you can install the ink cartridges and see if the printer works correctly.
If you ever get the error message, you can consider the print head to be permanently bad.

In the mean time, you can keep your eyes open for a used printer that has the same print head in it. Any of these printers will work:
i860
iP4000
iP4000R
MP750
MP760
MP780

Of course, you run the risk that a used printer will have some nozzles clogged unless you can do an extended nozzle check to make sure they all work.

Good luck.

Hello again! Just one more thing I forgot. When I was checking, testing, etc. it would always fail at trying to auto-align the head and say press OK and do again but never any joy. I managed to print a a paper where it had A, B, C, D, E and F across the top and down the side starting from the top was +7, +6 down to 0 to -3. Beside each number was a black square. In the square were lines which would be different shades. I just can't remember if that was for a nozzle check or something to do with alignment. Will go ahead and clean the head. Cheers!

That's why I said to hit the reset button if it asks you to do an auto align, it justs wastes time when the nozzles aren't working.

I am resurrecting this thread! My MP760 has been working great for me, I have been using refill kits from Precision Colors and I am to this point completely satisfied!

I was using it with Windows XP and had no issues....

However, I rebuilt my computer this past weekend with a new motherboard, ram and cpu, I also installed Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit and I am having trouble with the printer being recognized.....

I did go to the Canon website and I downloaded and installed the following:

MP760 MP Driver Ver. 6.20 (Windows 7 x64/Vista64)
10/16/2009 13.88MB

My Printer Ver. 2.8.0 (Windows 7/7 x64/Vista/Vista64/XP/2000)
12/27/2010 2.59MB

MP Navigator Ver. 1.17 (Windows 7/7 x64/Vista/Vista64/XP/XP x64/2000/Me/98)
05/23/2010 9.46MB

First I saved the files to their own folder and then proceeded to install the drivers and files, everything looked good as I received the message that the printer should be detected shortly (after turning it on when prompted) and after about 5 mins I received a caution and an error message...something to the effect that the printer could not be detected....

I was wondering if anybody else is having issues with these drivers and Windows 7?

I completely deleted/uninstalled everything that was downloaded and I suppose I will try again, I would love to have this printer up and running again.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

My issue is fixed!! I tried again today after deleting everything and reinstalling the files that I mentioned in post #27 above, well I kept on getting the same error/caution message that the printer PORT could not be detected, I also received a message in the desk top tray that the printer driver could not be installed......

I called Canon support and I have to say that they were great! I got through right away and the tech was very patient!

I was instructed to install the printer through control panel:

-hardware and sound
-devices and printers
-add a printer
-add a local printer
-use an existing port, but I had to change it - it was showing LPT1: (printer port) so I dropped down the box and selected USB001 (virtual printer port for USB) - I think this is where my main problem was!
-install the printer driver but I had to update the list to show the Canon MP760 and then select it from the list
-from there it was smooth sailing!!!

Does anybody know if this process would have installed the latest driver from the Canon website (ver. 6.20) or does windows install whatever driver is most compatible? It didn't really give me a choice but did everything automatically

He also asked for all of my mailing information but I'm not sure why.....maybe to send product info and advertisements?

Anyways, everything seems to be working properly and I'm a happy camper!!

Barfl2 I also purchased a S/H MP760 in the UK via E-bay. for 5.50 plus 18 new non-OEM Carts. Had some problems to stsrt with but ghwellsjr soon gave me all the necessary
information to get it going. Its been brilliant I use it every day not heavy usage probably 5/6 pages and I am refilling by both top fill and the German Method now with sqeezy bottles

and Canon ink from Octoinkjet. Had a problem originally in finding used BC-6 empty carts for refilling but Pharmacist advised I can use the CL-8 which are available at a very modest cost and I am gradually gettting rid of the compatibles

from Octoinkjet. So thanks to all the contributors on this Forum I am a very happy Camper. Also retained MY HP7760 and use it a couple of times a week as it is also easy to refill
and troublefree
