Also, you need to install the software before you plug in your printer. If you plugged it in first, you will need to unplug it, uninstall all the software, re-install the software and wait for it to ask you to plug in your printer.

How about printing--does that work?

When it is properly installed, I just hit the Scan button on the printer and it brings up a dialog box asking me which software application I want to run (MP Navigater or ScanGear).

I don't know what having a later version of MP Navigator will do.

Thanks for the input guys! I will unplug and uninstall and try again.....I think the sequence of the way I did things was off.

The funny thing is that the printer is in fact recognized under control panel printers and faxes - it shows as Canon MP760 series printer and its online...

I just printed something and it worked, I then clicked on MP navigator 1.1 (the one that is dedicted to the MP760) and went through the scan process and it looked as though it was working but then gave me the error message from before so I am going to start fresh with the downloads again.

It does print great by the way!!!

I am running windows XP, the drivers I downloaded were:

MP760 MP Driver Ver. 600a for Windows XP/2000

MP Navigator Ver. 1.16 (Windows 7/7 x64/Vista/Vista64/XP/2000/Me/98)

But I did not download:

My Printer Ver. 2.3.0 (Windows 7/7 x64/Vista/Vista64/XP/2000)

So I will also include that one and a few of the others as well, I will report back later.

Ok I think I'm in business! I deleted everything and started over but I was having the same issue until I decided to unplug the printer USB cable from my USB hub and plug it directly into the back of the tower and then it worked no problem!!! I think the issue was with my hub and although it works fine with other devices plugged in, it was giving me issues with the scan feature of the printer when I tried to scan anything.
But its working fine now and I'm happy!!

Thanks again guys!

You need to get a new hub. I ran into something similar with an older "compatible 2.0" usb hub.

This is from the on-Screen manual for my MP610:

An error message appears and the ScanGear window fails to appear.

Solution 1:

Confirm that the machine is powered on.

Solution 2:

Attach the USB cable to a different USB port on the computer itself (not a hub).

Solution 3:

If a USB hub is used for the connection, do not use it. Attach the cable to a USB port on the computer itself (not the hub).

Solution 4:

Install MP Drivers from the Setup CD-ROM.

Solution 5:

Select the machine from Select Source.

Thanks guys! I ended up moving the printer to the other side of the desk and plugging in directly to the tower and all seems good now! My hub seems to work fine with other devices plugged in but for whatever reason the printer scanner was not happy with it - the printer printed fine its just that the scan failed part way through the process, oh well....I may try another hub for S & G's but otherwise all is well now!

Glad you got it all working but why would you want to try another hub when iPXXXX found a Canon instruction that says not to use a hub. I realize that it was for a different printer but chances are this is a problem that has been around from the beginning and Canon didn't realize until their later printers.

Also, what's "S & G's"?

I do intend to keep the printer connected to the tower, trying another hub would just be a matter of curiosity to see if it is something of a common issue which going by the information iP4XXX provided, it does in fact seem like a problem so the printer is definately staying connected to the tower where it is working just fine!

Frankd1 - definitely use the drivers from Canon's web site. Not the disks which you may or may not have obtained from seller.
As for your trouble with scanning, make sure that your computer not only recognizes the Printer (as per Ruffin above) BUT ALSO go to "scanners & cameras" in control panel and make sure that the scanner is also seen by your PC. Depending upon which operating system you are using (XP, Vista or7) you might need to go into Device Manage, scroll down to "Imaging Devices". Make sure the scanner is recognized by your sytem.
