variable luck resetting carts on Epson 1430

I bought a very clean, lightly used, Epson 1430, equiped with a set of 6 carts. The ink and carts are from an online dealer named CISInks. The carts are ver. 6.0 I was happy to see. What I like about that version is that they were not ARC chips, or if they were, the carts could be reset with an external re-setter I got from InkJet Mall. The monitor showed the Light Magenta to be nearly exhausted and I could reset that cart without having to wait for the alert from the computer. After I reset that cart, I thought I might as well top off the other five carts. The first two were yellow and black and the reset went smoothly, the LED going from red to green without a hitch. But it was very difficult for Light Cyan, Magenta, and Cyan to accept the resetter. Finally, after playing around with the position of the resetter to be just right, these three were accepted. I was ready to give up more than once. What's odd is that at first the nozzle check showed all six patterns to be perfect, right after filling by eye-ball, it was just the ink level monitor didn't register.

Anyone have some thoughts on how resetting all six might go more smoothly? I have a hunch a second resetting should go more easily, perhaps the chips needed to be acclimated. Or maybe I should break down and get a another brand of refillable carts.

I got the printer for $150, and I thought the printer was well worth it. The only other hitch is the output tray... it's missing the outmost extension, and I can't find that part on the web.

I think I have a spares/repair 1500W (same model as the 1430, just the EU designation) so as/when I get a chance I'll take a look for that and let you know if it still has that bit of the tray.

As to the cartridges, it's most likely just positioning that's the trick. I've not used resetters on ARC's too often and in my experience they usually don't work but if you can get this working reliably then all the better.

Just out of interest, if you get a chance, can you peel off the sticker, remove the rear screws and take a few pictures of the internal circuit board. I'd be interested to see what the actual unit is.

I think I'd better start a new thread to search for that part, lest I get in trouble for thread drift! But if you have such a part I'd be mighty grateful!

I don't think I'm ready for getting the printer back off for a photo, sorry to say.

Finally, how do I know if I have ARC chips or not? I thought version 6.3 chips signaled an ARC trips and I have version 6.0. Also, I haven't had the printer long enough for a cart to "hit bottom" and call for a filled cart - which I understand to be a feature of 6.3 carts.

Finally, how do I know if I have ARC chips or not?

Just print until the status monitor reports a cartridge empty or not available, take it out, refill it , insert it again and look to the status monitor that it shows a full cartridge again.

Thanks Ink, but I just topped off all my carts, so it'll be a while before I can do that. Sorry! but now I'll know what to do. Isn't it true that an ARC chip wouldn't permit me to top off the carts that needed it at a time of my own choosing? An ARC cart would allow a refill only if the status monitor signaled me to install a new (or freshly refilled) cart.

The tray has three parts, two of those parts are extensions and I need only the small one, the one furthest from the printer. But if I have to buy the complete tray, I'll do so. I bought the printer used but it's in excellent shape otherwise. No clogs! It hasn't even hit the "ink pad full" milestone. $150!

that's o.k., just print until the next cartridge reports empty/not available, you may want to reset and refill the other carts as well at this time, but don't reset the empty one , the reset should happen (automatically) when you re-install that one again.

Thanks, Ink... how do you suggest resetting those other carts? Would you use one of those little plastic units (a little longer than say, a box of matches) with seven pins that make contact with the chip? The pins are spring loaded. I have a couple of those, bought at different times for different cartridge sets.

Ah, sorry for the confusion. I mean't the resetter itself. You can peel off the sticker on the resetter and that'll expose a couple of screws. Remove those and you can see the circuit board inside to see what the actual board is. No pressure at all though.

There are version 6.0 ARC's as well so your info on what denotes an ARC is not quite accurate. What counts is the way in which the chip firmware behaves once the cartridge reaches it's "empty" state. It should reset when power cycled at that point if it is an ARC.
