A purging system issue could also be a cause of loss of PGBK on nozzle checks.

If you still have no pigment black visible while continuing to print then you may have damaged
your print head and washing or rinsing at this state is a waste of time.

However you could do what turbguy suggested and check out the purge unit.

The purge unit is where the print head parks when your printer is not in use,
it's in on the right hand side behind the power buttons.

To check to see if it is working properly first raise the top cover (Lid)
this will allow the print head to move to the centre of the carriageway.

Next remover the power plug from the wall and this will allow you to then move the print head
(By hand) all the way to the left hand side of the carriageway.

Use a flash light to look into the right hand side of the printer and you’ll see two pads
very similar to the ones in the photo but not exactly the same,
squirt enough water onto these pads to flood them, use a syringe or large spoon.

Now close the top lid and power on the printer again Wait a minute or two for the printer
to stop purring and moving and then raise the top cover again and check to see if both pads
are dry or are still very much wet.

If they are reasonably dry then your purge unit is working normally, but if they are not
then this unit may well have a blockage in it and will need further attention.

If you purge unit is working properly then the only other possibility left is a damaged print head,
you can continue to print photos and black text if you wish too, just set the printers media
to matte or photo paper while using plain copy paper.

I don’t know if you can get ink from the US but if you can then try here for good quality inks

OK looking at the state of the inside of your printer, it’s covered in ink.

You need to soak a couple of paper towels in alcohol fold them up small and pat them down on your purge pads a couple of times to clean them up a bit, then pour some more alcohol over the two pads and let it stand for a while then do a normal head clean, and maybe your PGBK black will start to come back.
Nice DVD covers !

Hi oroblec

You could try this method for print head cleaning, I think your chances of success are good, as the PGBK is not totally missing but appears severely clogged: http://www.printerknowledge.com/threads/canon-mp540-saved-by-pharmacists-cleaning-solution.8176/ If you cannot obtain propylene glycol for preparing pharmacist's cleaning solution you can use glycerol = glycerine instead.

You can also use a window cleaner with ammonia like the original "Windex with Ammonia D". From your printer type number I guess your location is USA or Canada, and Windex is the recommended window cleaner for print head cleaning in the US.

If this print head cleaning method fails, then this post has links to other cleaning methods: http://www.printerknowledge.com/threads/mx870-and-5c00-error-code.8337/#post-65220

Note the warnings about not reinstalling a print head that has not been properly dried after cleaning outside the printer. Also note that cleaning the print head outside the printer is always risky. In worst case a not properly dried print head can ruin the logic board in the printer, making the printer a total loss, and a damaged logic board can damage a new print head.
