Out of curiosity I was even more puzzled when I saw you are actually using it for the colormunki. Because I also have one, what is the purpose of the rail (maybe using it with Agryll). Sadly so far I've only used it with the standard ccstudio / colormunki software, because when I first read about Agryll couple years ago I saw cmd promts installs etc and I was too overwhelmed and decided not to try it (because my cmd knowledge is really poor). What will be the benefit of using such rail for the standard ccstudio and maybe there is an easier Agryll version available now?

iPublish/i1Profiler can be downloaded, but most importantly if you attach the device there should be green check that there is licence for the rgb printer profiling (CMYK I don't think you are doing this unless using a print press and RIP). This is a culprit for so-called cheap second hand offers from i1Pro2 devices.

Thanks yes I was aware of this. Mine came from a known source a retired pro friend of mine. He had been through similar with his first unit a cheap ebay i1Pro which he could not get to work until I stepped in and showed him the ArgllCMS and GUI's. Not liking that he acquired an i1Pro2 with the correct software licence which I now own.

I only use it for printer profiles as I prefer my i1Display colorimeter for monitor calibration due to potentially being more accurate.

The rail is very useful (absolutely necessary ?) for working with ArgyllCMS produced prints as you will be measuring many more samples than the basic Colormunki software can produce, leading to more accurate profiles.

I suspect many shy away from cmd line driven software due to having to learn and remember the various commands. There is at least one current GUI front end for ArgyllCMS that may help ease the pain that is Little Argyll. You may like it

You should also search Pharmacists posts on this matter he has done a huge amount of testing and produce many ready to use print patches

A guide is useful when reading small patches and small patches save paper and ink.

In ccstudio I mostly generate A4 size patch sheets then print them half size two up on A4 paper. A4 size sheets printed on 5x7 is about the limit, maybe with a guide 4x6 would be possible.

I am dubious about a guide lifting the i1studio above the paper because stray light and reflections may interfere with the readings. I think a rule just to guide one side of the i1studio would be enough, but, I would want some kind of guide on the ruler to allow alignment with the patches. That guide would depend on patch size and I haven't thought of a good way to do that.

Actually the scanning rail/jig is very useful when producing i1Studio/ccStudio Colormunki-based profiles (50 + 50 or 50 + 2x50) that normally would consume 2 to 3 sheets of A4/Letter papers. With this jig you can produce an accurate profile with just 2 small sheets of 4x6" (10x15 cm) photo cards, which without the scanning jig/rail/ruler is not possible to do. By shrinking down the generated patches by the i1Studio/ccStudio software to only 25% it is possible to print the patch sets on 1/4 of the paper surface and this jig will guid the Colormunki/1iStudio device accurately over the tiny patches without scratching and damaging the adjacent patches. With some care you can produce same quality printer profiles while saving (expensive) paper and ink
