Sheet size cut from Roll for 3880 advice please

Are you sure, I have never seen that as roll paper is at least 2x more cheap as same paper sheet paper.

For starters let me be specific about the roll and sheet I have in mind.
Brand Canson
BFK Rivas 310gsm
A2 sheet 25 / box @ A$216 plus delivery

Roll 15m @ A$225 plus delivery

For me at this time, even to do the odd pano, its just NOT worth the agony!
Cut has to be perfect
Sheet flat
Coated surface pristine
Offcuts stored safely

Even buying a 44" roll similar length is in the A$500's

Gloss and other brands of paper probably differ, however, for my use Watercolour and BFK are the weapon of choice, I'm not even that impressed with Platine, just too much sheen.

I mean NO disrespect to the vast majority of Photographers/ Printers but to me, my personal taste defines the gloss and super gloss papers as LOLLIE wrapper paper, to which it could easily be confined

If THAT does not start a WAR I don't know WHAT it will take however, I do appreciate a fine glossy print as a work of art, (at LEAST equal to a Mars bar wrapper (try 2))


By now nothing will dig me out of this hole, but it is at most, and at best a personal and somewhat sanguine view. All papers have their place and adherents so its posted as JUST a personal choice, not a statement of fact

It's no wonder you're in a hole @3dogs, you lit the friggin dynamite thinking it was an eCiggie and forgot to run, now settle down in your new hole and have another Mars bar that should put the gloss back on your checks and we won’t say another word about you wrapping your lollies in photo paper..

I cut roll paper myself too
I use mdf board with cutting mat (several of them) glued to it. I have a large L square and that makes perfect cut every time. The positioning is made by turning a a series of nuts on a threaded rod. I have major positions like A3, A4, even A6 and no need to adjust every time.

The only improvement I would make is use more double sticky tape to glue the cutting mats and make replaceable strips from the same cutting mat in the spots where you actually cut. If not replaced then precession of the cut decreases and nice edge cuts are no longer possible.

This printer has electrostatic belt that moves the paper making feeding curled paper no problem !
Also it has waste ink tank that you can remove and empty, reset chip and good to go I suppose The carts are bladder type so resetting them is possible too.
Anyone have more info about this printer?

This Ricoh Aficio printer is much the same style and same league as the HP Officejet Pro series and Canon Maxify series of printers.

The Hp officejet Pro is the best of the 3 printers in that it all ready has chips, CISS and inks available for it right now, but it’s got to be remembered that these printers are all office printers and not Photo printers..

The name "GELJET" suggests that a special ink is used. Are any compatible inks and/or cartridges available? If it is not at all refillable, this makes the printer less interesting IMO.

You are correct and wrong too, the special ink is used but I think you can refill with normal EPSON ink (piezo head is used here) and it should work fine, there is special third party "GEL type" ink made in china available too. Look ebay, and aliexpress.

But custom printer ICC profile is a must if you use third party ink. I would recommend OCP german inks or InkTEC inks.

There are good reasons for Glossy being the desired norm. One is historical, once upon a time there was no other surface choice. Maybe it's the natural finish of the gelatin coating, although that's speculation on my part.

The other reason is for maximum Dmax. Blackest blacks. Which the flip side of this is, "Why does anyone use matte paper?" Oh, yeah, that's right. Hard to get pigment inks to behave on glossy papers.

Now, having said what I have, I agree with you, 3dogs. The good news is that pearl, some lustres, and semi-gloss give essentially the same performance as glossy but without the need for polarized sunglasses. Those are the finishes I do almost all of my printing on.

The Glossy prints a magnet for fingerprints, for those type of users that do not know how to handle prints, and when framed special anti reflexive glass needs to be used like for glasses etc.

That is expensive. So it's better to print on luster, semi glossy etc.
