Looking at the User Manual for the MP830, under the Copying section beginning on page 42, when "Copying Onto Both Sides Of The Paper", the NOTE on page 45 says:

"When the document is set to the ADF, the document pages are not ejected in the original order under the machine's default setting. If you want the document pages to eject in the original order, set <Two-sided output setting> to <Output by page>. See "Two-sided output setting" on page 136."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On page 51 of the manual, under the section "Making Multiple Copies of an Entire Document (Collation)", one can collate copies either as successive pages, meaning the entire document is completely copied in original order before proceeding to make a second copy of the entire document (pages 123, 123, 123, ...), OR, each individual page of the original document is copied times the number of total copies desired (page111, 222, 333, ...). Of possible import is the NOTE on page 52 which states "This function cannot be used in conjunction with other copy functions".

This may mean you will not be able to DUPLEX AND COLLATE at the same time when using this function.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Looking at the installed "MP830 On-Screen Manual", I found the following which may or may not apply to your situation.

----------

Restrictions on the Printer Driver

Windows Xp / Windows 2000

Depending on the document type to be printed, the paper feed method specified in the printer driver may not operate correctly.
In this case, open the printer driver setup screen from the Print dialog box of the application software, and specify the correct Paper Source setting on the Main tab.

With some applications, the Copies setting in the Page Setup tab of the printer driver may not be enabled.
In this case, use the copies setting in the print dialog box of the application software.

If the selected Language in the About dialog box does not match the operating system interface language, the driver screen may not be displayed properly.

Do not change the Advanced tab items of the printer properties. If you change any of the items, you will not be able to use the following functions correctly.
Also, if Output to File is selected in the Print dialog box of the application software and with applications that prohibit EMF spooling, such as Adobe PhotoShop LE and MS Photo Editor, the following functions will not operate.

- Preview before printing on the Main tab

- Reduce spool data size in the Print Options dialog box

- Page Layout Printing, Poster Printing, Booklet Printing, Duplex Printing (manually), Print from Last Page, and Collate on the Page Setup tab

Since the resolution in the preview display differs from the printing resolution, text and lines in the preview display may appear different from the actual print result.

In some applications, the printing is divided into multiple jobs.
To prohibit printing, delete all divided jobs.

Tried to duplex copy with collating via the printer's control panel and not able to do both at same time.

You could manually duplex (the old fashioned way) and use the ADF to copy and print odd pages first then reload the original document in the ADF to copy the even pages, and put the odd pages only copies one of the document feed trays for their blank side to be printed with the even pages of the original document, paying close attention to the orientation of the half-printed/half-blank in relation to the orientation of the originals in the ADF in order to have both sides of the copy oriented as desired.

Another potential solution is to use a computer with MP Navigator. First do a batch scan in duplex mode using teh ADF. Then "Print Document" and print in appropriate duplex mode. The benefits with this second method are the originals are only run through the scanner mechanism once (less potential for screwup) and the duplex scanning and printing is fully automatic. The downside for you is that you will need a computer attached - directly or via a print server - with the software installed to do this.

One caveat, My MP Navigator will not "Print Documents" as described above even though the selection is available and it is clearly offered/explained in the User Manual. I guess I didn't install those drivers when I installed MP Navigator.

One other point - it is possible a newer firmware revision allows th functions you want. Doubtful, but something to consider.

All in all, your cloud has a silver lining. There are workarounds to collating by hand.

stratman, thx for digging into this one. in a way glad to see that its not a pilot error. extra credit if anyone can figure this one out.

i had tried the MP Navigator Batch Scan "Print Document" suggestion, but did not collate properly. FYI, initially my "Print Document" option was not available. i reinstalled MP Navigator and then it was available, but alas it still did not collate.

the manual workaround i have been using for years is to use duplex copying doing 1 copy at a time.

not elegant, takes longer, but no manual collation of copies.

thx again

Have you tried Canon tech support? Sometimes they will answer a question despite your warranty being expired.

quick update. first, thx stratman for all the suggestions. i contacted canon support, see below:

a. canon confirmed that using the MP830 in standalone, ie using buttons on the printer that there is no way to do both DUPLEX and COLLATE for multiple copies

I am sorry to hear that there is a problem performing the copy and collate and 2 sided on the MP830. Unfortunately as you found out that you cannot do both. You can perform both if you are printing from the computer.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

b. canon did suggest a solution using MP Navigator, there is a 2 step approach to do both DUPLEX and COLLATE for multiple copies:
1. using MP Navigator scan DUPLEX document to a PDF
2. print PDF, DUPLEX mode, COLLATED with multiple copies selected

suggestion b. does work, take longer but saves the manual collation effort.

Good to hear you have a solution. The thought crossed my mind about using PDF's but didn't test it.

The MP830 is a great AIO.
