Question on Canon starter cartridges in new printer

My new MG 6821 inkjet printer comes with the 5 OEM partially filled starter carts - wondering if these are capable of being refilled or did Canon design them somehow to be one use/disposables?

The MG6821 comes with completely full start-up cartridges, and not partially filled ones, and now for the bad news, its near next to impossible to refill theses cartridges, because they are the start-up version type and not the proper normal sized ones.

If you wish to refill then the wisest option is to purchase a complete set of XL cartridges, then a resetter and the correct bottles of 3rd party inks, then you're cooking with gas.

The cost alone for the XL cartridges is almost the same price as the printer was to purchase originally, so starting to refill is mighty expensive but then your costs become almost zero for the foreseeable future, after the initial outlay.

Alternatively, you can cut your losses now and buy a Pro 100 for great colour photos or a Maxify model, both can be refilled easily and are far cheaper to use and run than your MG 6821.
P.S. I am not a great lover of these MG 6821 printer models, sorry...

Can you explain why you said that "its near next to impossible to refill theses cartridges" ?

Is it because it is not possible to reset the ship ?

A setup cartridge is the same that a low capacity cartridge (not XL)

This is a picture of a CLI-571 "SETUP" cartridge, containing 7 mL of ink.
It is possible to top-filling it easily by removing the 4 mm ball plug like all the Canon cartridges I know.

But I still do not understand the role of SETUP cartridges . . .

@Palatino, firstly it is now possible to reset the OEM chip on the 571 carts, there is a redsetter available to do that very job now.

You are correct a set-up cart is the same as an XL cart, but with one exception, 66% on the reservoir side of the setup cart is unavailable to the refiller.

By removing the ball, you can only get around 4 ml of ink into the set-up carts, but is it worth it for just 4 ml ? whereas on the XL carts you have the full capacity of the reservoir available to you and can get around 10 ml in...

Aftermarket one time cartridges are by far the most economical way to run these printer models, because you don’t need to purchase extra XL cartridges or a resetter, but the down side is the colour and quality of the ink within...

I have a pet hate for theses printers, I reckon it’s like working with your hands tied behind you back, that’s my opinion...

I know that a resetter is available for 570/571.
My question is if a SETUP chip can be reset or not ?

What is a "SETUP" cartridge ?
Some people said that the setup cartridges are necessary for the first start of the printer ?


Why 4ml ?
The capacity of a regular cartrigde (not XL ) is 7 ml, not 4 ml ?

And you can notice there is no prism on 570/571 cartridges.

@Palatino, I haven’t heard that it doesn’t work, and I imagine if it didn’t there would be howls of complaints to the makers of the redsetter.

The official capacity of a new start-up cartridge maybe 7 ml but when you try to refill them you can only get 4 ml in safely...

@Palatino, any less and it wouldn’t be worth refilling the cartridge because of the threat of ink starvation issues...

The set up cartridges can be refilled, of course, but, since they hold significantly less ink then it is wiser to obtain full sized, or, better yet, the XL cartridges for refilling.

There is a chip resetter available for this cartridge model which I have seen is limited to 100 resets. Can the set up cartridge chips be reset? I don't recall an answer to this on the forum and is the reason I did not answer your question earlier. Potentially, the ink capacity of these set up cartridges makes the question practically moot given what else is available to use. Maybe you can help the forum and provide an answer to the forum by trying it out.

I have read that one needs to use the set up cartridge to install and initiate the printer. Using non-set up cartridges causes an error or halt to the set up of the printer.

It appears this is the potential volume of the sponged side of the set up cartridge. How much ink is in this chamber when you refill is a function of your usage before refilling.
