Question about cli-551 or cli-251 refilling

Hello,
I have an inkjet printer Canon IP8750 which use CLI-551 cartridges (equiv. IP8720 in US market with CLI-251).

We have tried ink from goutte-encre.com (we are in France). I don't know from which manufacturer is this ink. But even, if the prints are good after calibrating , they fade rapidly when exposed.

I've read many thread but didn't find my answers.

You often advice image specialist but it seems (on their web site www.image-specialists.com) that they don't do ink for cli-251 or cli-551...
So now this is confused for me.

Do you know if the ink cartridges CLI-251 and CLI-551 are compatible?
Which ink vendor do you recommend?

@The Hat: I believe that you use similar printer and you are in Europe, what do you use as ink and refillable cartridge (from which vendor/manufacturer)?

Hi Kye and welcome.

I do some work on a iP7250 and service it for my grandson, and I use the same I.S. inks in it as I do for all my CLl-8 carts with no huge colour problems, his photos look great.

The CLl-251/250 are exactly the same as the Cll-551/550 cartridges with just a different chip for the US and the Europe.

This is what I felt : As the chip is different, I can't order empty cli-251 cartridges (on precisioncolors.com for example).

I already saw this link (octoink), but for cli-551, this is not I.S. ink, but from Sudhaus. And as read on German site provided above, this ink has the same fading problem that I know with the printer of a friend...

I have a 525/526 printer and use Peach cartridges since 2 years.
It is not the same ink set as 550/551 but I could not imagine the quality would be totally different.
Left a few prints half covered on a table near a south window all summer, and could not say they were faded.

Since the test you mention quotes Prodinks (ex Sudhaus) about the same quality as Peach, I ordered a refill set.
Will print a test set tomorrow and report after a week.

As I explained in post #2 the cartridges are exactly the same but why would you want to order these carts from Precisioncolor, the chip on all of these carts cannot be replaced or reset.

You can however order 3rd party compatible carts from both Precisioncolor and OctoInkjet that will work in your printer because they use a multi region ARC chip.

If you read my post again you will also see where I mentioned I used I.S. and not Sudhaus inks in my 551 carts with little or no loss in colour quality.

I have plenty of I.S. ink stocks and am very happy with the fade resistance of this ink, I have however used Sudhaus inks before but it got a bit confusing when it was time for refilling, that’s the only reason I don’t use it now..

Perhaps I was not clear, I don't want to order OEM carts, but compatible carts to refill.
I didn't know that ARC chip was multi region (in fact, it was my first question).
I was just looking for the best ink with cart to refill according to your experience.
As most vendors are saying that ink for these printer are specific, I didn't want to try ink for other model, but you seem to indicate that it should be no problem.

Indeed, the good days with replaceable/resetable chips seem to be over at Canon since the 550/551 and compatible carts with ARC chips is the only possible solution.

As far as I could deduce the 550/551 refill sets share the pigment and photo blacks (and also grey I suppose) with the 520/521 and 525/526 (all European type numbers), but CMY are different.
From this it could be supposed the technical requirements are the same, but the color is different.
If you can make your own profiles you could try to use the CMY from 521 and 526 in 551 cartridges.
But since the ink costs the same I see no reason for it (unless you have a stock).

PS: my photo printed with 525/526 Prodinks ink did not fade since last week

They most likely are not. I have never heard of multi region ARC chips.

The CLl-251/250 are exactly the same as the Cll-551/550 cartridges with just a different chip for the US and the Europe.

Note that the cartridges are the same, but the chip is different. I think this applies to both OEM and compatible cartridges.

What I said was:- the US compatible cartridges and chips will work on European printers also, so if you buy these carts from the US or Europe they’ll work on both sides of the pond, the only difference is the OEM cartridge chip which is not multi region, nor can it be reset or removed.

This only applies to the 551/251/751 compatible cartridge chips however..
