Problems with Pixma Pro-1

Hello possible helpers!

I'm trying to trouble shoot getting a Pro-1 back in printing action!

I have no idea how long it has been sitting around (I'm a care-taker of a residence and saw this printer laying around and wanted to print some high quality photos!).

Probably a rookie move in printer trouble shooting but I dove in and tried to print a 13x19 image in the manual paper feeder, it grabbed like 4 pieces of thick photo paper and tried printing but it wouldn't advance the paper and only printed a 1/2 black strip and stop the print because It recognized a jam of multiple pieces of paper. Next I tried using thin glossy paper 11x17, in the manual paper feeder, and it again grabbed around 3 pieces but it was able to run the print job but it did an extremely streaky and just plain horrible print, nothing resembling the image. Next I tried using the rear paper feed slot and after many times it won't grab any size, or kind of paper, showing a no paper error... when there is clearly paper in the feeder slot.

I've tried to to run all of the cleaning settings, ran too low on ink to continue... tried to clean the roller, and the bottom plate as well with no luck. Keeps telling me that there is no paper in the slot (pretty annoying!)

I honestly have minimal experience with printers and trouble shooting them... Glad I found this website! I'm hoping this community can help me get this printer up and running for myself and the owner of the printer

hi @John Connell, if I was trying to get an unused printer back to print again, I wouldn’t have started from where you just did.

Idle printers need to be phased in and coaxed back to working life, not thrown in at the deep end, and as to whether you can get this beast to function again is anyone’s guess.

Firstly, you should never try to print a photo to start with, any printer after such a huge time out needs a good medical check first, like removing the carts and agitating them vigorously, then running an Ink Quality Maintenance cycle, then a normal head clean and finally a nozzle print check.

This would be the normal procedure for getting a printer up and running again, and then attending to what ever else that might be required for it’s safe return, and as you have not done any of these, then the printers’ continued survival is suspect.

To further muddy the waters, attempting to force the printer to print something to quickly you have inadvertently got paper jammed in the feed inlets, and here I’m only surmising, but you probably just pulled the paper jam out through the back again, that is a no, no..

To encourage a printer to function once again, baby steps are required, and that means softly gently does it, not going in all guns blazing, and hopefully you haven’t damaged the paper path sensor, because recovery from that would be slim.

Theses words may sound hard and critical, but they need to be said because you’ve actions have been far to aggressive and could have take away the chances of a successful outcome.

Will this printer recover ?, if the paper sensor can reset itself that’s good, but sorting out the print quality will take far more work and considerable expensive, like new inks for sure, and possibly a new print head ?

My advice is to start again, but this time slowly and do some of the things mentioned above, patients and time are you best friend so use them wisely, and if you can get a nozzle print then post it up here, then we can take it from there...
