Hi Guys,

I've been looking around for any tutorial concerning the flushing of a pgi-72 cart and had absolutely no luck. Can someone please enlighten me on this process?

There is no real need to "flush" but if removal of the remaining ink inside is desired then I've had a video on this for a quite a while as well.
Check the servicing video. You don't necessarily need to shorten the needle as if you're careful, you can use a normal length needle. If there is little left inside, you might also be able to use a kitchen paper towel and wick it out till empty! but keep the cart upright as per outlet down. ( to refill, you could then place/stand the cart in a pool of ink and it would take it back up automatically till it is full! )

Now there will be times when you will need to service the cartridge even if you do not need to flush it. These are the times when air is trapped inside the bladder and you cannot make the full weight anymore. The cart is stuck at being underweight. To fix this, if there is a little underweight, you can squeeze and then top off a few times. Or else you need to pull the air out as per the video.

The other thing you need to watch for is that when all the ink is extracted, you should immediately recap or refill because it is the liquid on the internal mesh film that performs as a sealing layer due to surface tension. This is an ingenious design that Epson eventually copied and refined on their newer desktops and also incorporated a low ink optical sensor. There is no optical sensor on Canon's design so one needs to make sure the cart is actually full of ink when the chip is reset. A scale is highly recommended.

Thanks for the information! I didn't even think to look for the pgi-9 carts. One question: If the cart is extremely dried out, will the distilled water be enough to rejuvenate the sponge?

I'm still on my original carts in my pro-10 and I want to gear up for refilling. Is it best practice to have an extra set on hand and change the entire set out when one goes low like I do with the pro-100?

I did a quick search on eBay for some empty pgi-72 carts and found nothing. Are these rare to find?

You won’t find any because that subject has all ready been covered with the PGl-9 cartridges, both mentioned cartridges are exactly the same.

When it comes to it there really shouldn’t be a need to flush out these cartridges at all, if you change inks and want to be sure that you’re only using the new ink and nothing else then use a cartridge clip to suck out the last drops of remaining ink, then refill with new ink..

Keep an eye on this d00d's store, I just snagged another 22 empty carts from him....
So I will have 3 sets, but some extras I can share if needed...
