Hi! I intend to buy a Canon Pixma iP4500. After some surfing I came across this "PGI 5 BK and Cli-8 cartridges with Auto Reset chips" at this website

I wonder if anybody has ever come across this product or ever used it. As shown in the website, the company is based in America. Has anybody use this in their Canon Pixma iP4500? Is the product available in Asia? any info would very much appreciated. Thank You.....

What part of Asia? Well if you're looking for CLI-8s rather than BCI-7e, odds are good it won't be an issue.

I've not used them, but I imagine they would be most handy. If they reset when you pull them, and fill them with ink, they will become "low" when the ink hits the prism. If you pull them and replace them, well the printer will think they are full until you hit the prism. I'm not sure how the printer will react to "full" chips and an exposed prism.

But either way, odds are good they come from Shenzhen, China.

I don't know if they carry the chips, or the cartridges with chips, but they do claim do small orders 1-100.

I thought about chips rather than a resetter my self. I decided a resetter would be more useful.

1. I would like to get a resetter but I can't find any in my country, Malaysia. I found somebody who is willing to ship to my location on e-bay. The seller is from Australia. He is charging AUS $39 for the resetter and AUS $12 for shipping? Is this a good bargain?

2. I would like to know if anybody ever used the refillable type of cartridge with auto reset chip (as advertise in that website in my first posting) successfully. My understanding of refillable type of cartridge is that the cartridge come with its own re-sealable refilling hole. Hence no need to refill by injecting trough the cartridge like the German method. I have tried to source for that long needle but unsuccessful. I haven't ask the pharmacy yet.

3. I haven't bought the Canon iP4500 yet, but I think time is running short as not many shops have them anymore. Actually I am still undecided wheather to buy Canon iP4500 or Epson Stylus Photo 1390. I prefer Canon but reliable refills are not widely available yet in my country. However, refillable cartridge with auto reset chip is easily available for Epson Stylus Photo 1390, but Canon only cost 1/3 of this A3 Epson printer. Anybody got any advice?

I forget exactly how much I spent now. Somewhere in the $30-$32 range USD. $51AUD=$34USD prime rate. I'm told they are cheaper in the UK.

meritline.com does international shipping from the US,but they do it via FedEx. That's the problem with US companies, they often are locked into one shipper and don't deal with the US postal service. I have no connection with them, other than I buy discs from them from time to time. They have a link to fedex to estimate shipping cost, but you need an account and I'm too lazy. But I doubt it will be as cheap as shipping from AUS.

I suspect shipping from Shezhen, China would be even cheaper. That's where many are sold from in bulk.

If you google "canon chip resetter Shezhen" you'll find many results. Just recently one miss.jasmine was spamming for "Shenzhen Print Media Co , Ltd".

Shenzhen is where many, if not all, are made.

This is only if you want to have lots of fun. You know you can get one from AUS, and it will cost you a couple of dollars more than what an American would spend. Likely more than a European, but it could be worse.

I would love to see the look on someones face if they looked in your package and found needles. Someone on this forum had a good link to bottles with blunt needles.

My experience with refillable cartridges is limited, and to be honest, I found refilling OEM canon to be a better value. More fills to the dollar. The ones I bought were from inksupply.com (No connection, I just buy ink from them).

It really depends what your application is. I have both a mp830 and the older Epson Stylus Photo 1280. I just switched to refillable cartridges and have yet to adjust the color properly for my output. They are VERY different printers. Canon in my opinion offers the better general use product. It does text well, it does photos very well. I've not used the 1390/1400, but in general Epsons in this class are good for photos, but they "can" do text, just not as well as HP or Canon. It's a 6 tank printer, so you'll use the light inks very quickly. Also there is no way to clean one color, the head is attached to a pump and the pump sucks on all the colors. You'll waste more in, but you will also get more pages per ml from the ink you do have. My experience with the Epson r200, newer than my 1280, was that the ink doesn't move as much as Canon. White text looks better on both the 1280 and even better on the r200. The big epson benefit is it's not too much trouble to add an external waste ink tank, and CISS ink system. Some people even use the waste ink and put them back into a black cartridge and print draft text with it. It won't be as black, it'll be a reddish black. The head on a Epson without a doubt will outlast that of a Canon, so long as it doesn't clog. You can clean the head with alcohol ammonia+water (window cleaner).

The canons, I can speak of the ip5200 as the only difference in the ip4500 are extra medium sized nozzles. It's a good office printer. It has two trays and you can put envelops in the back, paper in the bottom. The text is good and fast, not as good as HP, but very good. It has an extra photo black. You can remove and replace the head. Some people like the duplex feature, as in the printer will flip the paper and print on the back side. I don't like the fact it prints at lower quality, and it's faster to flip the paper your self. I don't think they have changed the ink for the big black text cartridge in many years, they are still using 30pl nozzles for black text. Plenty of places to get the pigmented ink. If I could only own one printer, this would be it. It does everything well. The cartridges are VERY easy to refill. Sure you have the german method, but I'm happy just removing the ball, covering the bottom, adding ink, and putting in a plastic nylon screw (#8 / or M4) Epsons are no fun to refill, unless you have a CISS.

AUS $51 for a resetter? Shipped, to Malaysia? Be happy.

If you're not happy, learn Chinese or deal with bad English from Shezhen, China.

Want fancy ink (pigments)? Want a CISS? Don't do Canon.

You want a general purpose printer, documents and photos, Canon is great.

Thanks IGExpandingPanda for the info. I like the Canon iP4500 too but a bit worried about the ease of getting the refill supply in my country. But I guess, I can always try buying it online.

Anybody know if anywhere in the forum showing pics of how this is done? I only came across the German Method showing the pics.

If you decide to refill from the top they do make a self-taping screw that works great for pulling the factory filler ball.

I am not sure who makes the ball extractor but it came in an old Stratitec refill kit.

I've downloaded the pdf guide. I have not try it but the guide is very informative.
