I totally agree with you on that one but it still happens, so if one drop of OEM ink still remains in the sponge after flushing with water then this gelling problem can occur inside the print head over time..
If that's the case, what's so "special" about yellow OEM CLI-42 ink??

Again I don’t know that (New formula ?) But it may not just be the Yellow.

I had similar problems using Prodinks with pigment Magenta..

I don't flush them before changing the ink. Just drill a refill hole, reset the chip and fill and go. The HP printers have a terrible paper path and also grab a lot of doubles, I have 3 of them here but we used them to replace some lasers in the office. They also have a terrible print length problem, send 8 business cards multi up and you get something like 1.8 x 3.5" instead of 2 x 3.5.
Our paper is custom hand made with embedded flower or vegetable seeds, not very offset friendly. I was an offset pressman for years and it's really hard to watch how slow these printers can be!
The Memjet has one big advantage over the HP Pagewide printers in that their heads are user replaceable AND you can wipe them manually if needed.

Do you do the same for CLI-42 Yellow (given the recognized gelling issue)?

No, I'm well aware of that. We got the warning with our first set of inks from Precision Colors. I buy empty CLI8's from them.

Well,

--stuff deleted

We do a lot more printing with these things than Canon ever intended, so I expect some failures. I have a job coming up that is 20,000 11.5 x 17.5" sheets with about 20% coverage, so I need to have a rock solid way of maintaining these heads for a month at least.
I wish I could find a high speed inkjet that could print as well as the Canons do, but no company save Memjet is making a sheet fed printer strong enough to handle the unique paper we make. And their machines cost $20K

Holy Cow!!!! 20,000 sheets 11½ x 17½ by inkjet.

Gotta be better alternatives. For quality, time and cost. Not to mention peace of mind given your current travails.

Just as a matter of interest have you investigated outsourcing to a local commercial offset printer?

I know it is none if my business, but my interest is piqued by this scenario.

With such a heavy duty cycle for the OP you might think that the Photo Magenta issue would show up in all the print heads, but it hasn't. Why? What is different for 5 print heads and not the others?

It has been observed on the forum that the printers that are routinely, continuously used do not suffer clogs, such as the printers of @jimbo123. Maybe the amount of usage of the OP's Pro-100 printers, a design flaw in those printers, and/or the ink increases the risk of failure.

Additionally, as @The Hat has brought up, a phenomena that forum member @mikling postulated about cartridge failures occuring after repeated refills performed after the Low ink warning. Mikling believes that waiting to refill when the cartridge is marked Empty by the printer creates a condition where ink ultimately fails to flow properly through the sponge. This may then lead to nozzle burnouts. If so, wouldn't we ultimately see multiple colors affected? And, if this is true, what an even bigger PITA for the OP to refill so many more times - when the cartridge is marked Low instead of Empty - considering the gigantic print jobs he does!

If no reports of Photo Magenta clogs / malfunctions with OEM ink then a potential solution is to use only OEM Photo Magenta.

Yup, it's starting to look like that. I had to do the same thing with the Pro-9000's, but with the cyans. Thanks guys, happy holidays! The biggest problem I think is the repetitive use of the same image over and over that's cooking them on long runs. When I don't have any long runs, during our normal season, there's hardly ever a problem.

I know Quiet Mode can be a pain in the ass slow but slowing the printer down could solve some of your problems, yes it’s slower in real time but probably faster when you think of the down time you have when the cartridge goes duff on you.

You should also try and replace all of your cartridges at the same time once one starts to get low, it ends up been quicker in the long run, some of my SRA3 sheets take up to 18 minutes to print so I have been there too.

That MACH 8 is a real beauty but is usually reserved for the likes of commercial houses or large companies, that's why the big price..
