It would be interesting to know, what’s wrong with Intel ?...

Whats wrong with intel, besides just about everything....heh

The biggest thing for me is what intel did to AMD and VIA with there compiler, if the compiler found a CPUID string that wasnt an intel chip, it crippled the CPU.
It was discovered in early 2000's, they were forced to remove it in an antitrust lawsuit, there is a lot of info if you google "intel compiler cripples amd/via"

And like mikling said, upgrading the cpu, good luck with that without having to upgrade the motherboard too...

Intel was engaged in anti-competitive behavior and settled the case without admitting fault. The issue, in part, was that Intel failed to inform software developers who used Intel compiler that non-Intel CPU's would be crippled in certain functions despite having those functions available. Not every benchmark deficit was entirely due to this crippling - AMD was not precisely equivalent to Intel in all things, but the (illicit) gamesmanship was apparent and significant.

Of course there were other compilers on the market that would not result in crippling AMD CPU's, but they could present their own issues in function. Intel compilers had market share with commercial software because it was good.

AMD is not infallible either. They have sold some CPU dogs of their own. And, AMD also changes and retires CPU socket types just like Intel. I had an AMD-based Athalon system with an MSI socket 939 motherboard that was unable to upgrade to any meaningful step up compared to the then current technology and price point available at that time. The 939 socket, released in 2004, was rendered obsolete when they released their AM2 socket TWO YEARS LATER in 2006.

Interestingly, if not seemingly counterinuitive given the issue with Intel compilers back when, is that Intel agreed to compensate Intel Pentium 4 owners for misleading benchmarking!

I am interested in an AMD Ryzen 1700X system. I am now using a core I7-6700K machine with 32 GB RAM.

32 GB RAM, now that's a serious owner. I have many people trying to tell me 8 GB is fine for what I'm doing (Photoshop); that's BS. Ps files can get large and slow without large amounts of RAM. The next system I build will have 32 GB RAM.

I think AMD finely has reached a point to compete with Intel with the Ryzen architecture. The days of the AMD Athlon, when Intel was challenged seriously, seem to be repeated again with this architecture..

Intel just planned to release 12 core Core-i9 and a few days later AMD has announced the Ryzen R9. Because the modular architecture of the Ryzen makes it very easy to add extra core units to the processor.

Maybe it is the controller on my external USB3.0 drive but I find that a HD connected to the MB controller is still better. For me the externals are for backup and keeping it offline most of the time....that way even if you get hit by some virus or ransomware, the backup is offline and safe.
