I have a brand new Canon MX420 , the black has an almost "lint" covered look to it . No real vertical lines , patterns or anything , just not solid .

Is it because its brand new , been doing many test prints black and white . Even "test patterns" off the web . Ran a couple of maintenance runs off the unit settings and says its fine .

My 1st printer , was going to get an HP6500A but was kinda ugly compared to the Pixma MX420 for same features and better price , minus Airprint option .

Thanks ,

Chris

You could be printing in "draft mode". Can you access the printer settings and switch to a higher quality printing mode?

Would that be a software option or right on the machine , the MX420 has the small led for preview and options.

I changed settings to vivid , and noise reduction to " strong " in the software . Changed print settings to high quality and images are better but black problem persists .

Any other changes i can make ?

Thanks

All of them! LOL
Chage you print quality to highest - best o whatever your driver has for quality options. Make sure the proper paper has been picked, and the highest resolution in the printer dirver.

If your printer is brand new and not printing properly then I reckon the black cartridge is a dud. :hit
Send it back and ask for a new one, thats what Id do..

I can take back just the cartridge ? Bought as a new printer with color and black supplied in box . From Future Shop in Canada , can you get that replaced you think ?

If the printer is brand new then call Canon Technical Support. Maybe it's a setting or printer malfunction rather than a cartridge that's at issue.

When my printer was still under warranty, Canon replaced a single cartridge that had a problem. Shipped it overnight.
