I would like to check the total number of pages printed on an MP640.

Is that info availbe on this printer?

I've done it before on laser printers but can't work out a way to do it on the 640.

Also interested in a servie manual if there is one on the net?

Tks

I think it is possible to print out the info from service mode. I think instructions on entering service mode can be found in the service manual. For the Pixma's 4000, 4200 and 5200 that I have, instructions on service mode is in the service manual, but I don't know the MP640 nor the service manual for it.

Doing a quick Google search I found two sites that sell the manual for download. Prices are 15 or 17 USD for service manual + parts catalogue. I found no free download. Links : http://www.tradebit.com/filedetail.php/96929742-canon-pixma-mp640-service-manual-repair and http://www.2manuals.com/index.php?cPath=21_62. As the price is given in Dollars, I think the manuals are for US version of the printer, I don't know how it is different from the EU version.

If you are considering buying a second hand MP640 and want to check its "mileage" , I admit that buying the manuals is a bit expensive.

Good news and bad news :/

How to enter service mode on the MP640

GOOD NEWS - I found out how to enter the service mode :)

NOTE: Do so at your own risk, as I do not know what if any damage can occur from pushing buttons in this mode!

1. The printer should be plugged in but turned off.

2. Hold down the RESUME button. On the MP640 it is the button with a red triangle surrounded by a circle.

3. Keep the RESUME button pressed and then hold down the POWER button.

4. Wait about 10 seconds then let go of the RESUME button but keep pressing the POWER button.

5. Press the RESUME button twice and then let go of the POWER button.

You should now enter the service mode, the screen shows SERVICE MODE and IDLE.

To exit just press the POWER button.

BAD NEWS :(

I have no idea how any of the service menus can be accessed.

Probably they're driven by a Canon service software.

Maybe the CD-enabler from Damn Printer is the tool ? Link here: http://damnprinter.com/category/five-easy-steps/instructions/mp-series?submit=Submit .

Maybe you can just execute the print command without executing the region change. In the EEPROM printout the info you want is TPAGE(TTL=xxxxx)

The D value in line 2 might be percentage of ink in the absorber, 100 being completely full. For the older Pixmas it is and it can be reset from service mode. Maybe there also is a tool for that ?

As you say yourself, do so at your own risk.

Did you get a service manual ? And it has got no info on service mode operations ?

I wonder if this is just another trick from Canon, to prevent Americans from CD printing ? They would also have to buy their cartridges in EU to make things more difficult.

Good luck in detective work on the printer.
Peter.

No I didn't get a service manual yet

I will try the program and see if it produces a print showing page count,

Peter.
It does not cause you to use EU ink cartridges. You still use the same ones that the printer originally came with.

I tried the print button on the tool at Damn printer.

It printed the page and I have now been able to see the data for the printer

Now if someone can determine how to reset the ink counter that would be very useful for everyone who hits the ink full service notification.

Not sure if Canon's shut down when the ink reservoir gets full, I'm guessing they do :(

@Redbrickman
It looks as if you are right about the canon service software. It might be this you are looking for: http://www.2manuals.com/product_info.php?products_id=1254 It is $29.29 but maybe a free download can be found?

@iP4XXX
That's good news to those who wants to enable CD printing on a US model printer :) But I don't understand how it works. I assumed that the region setting determined which cartridge series to use as well as allowing/disallowing CD printing. But if that is not true, then how does the printer know whether the 220 series or the 520 series cartridges are the proper ones? If the CD enabler only does a partial region change, it is indeed a very clever tool. Maybe the choice of cartridges is determined in hardware and cannot be changed? But that doesn't make sense to me. So did you use the CD enabler or do a registry hack or something entirely different?

In post #2 I wrote:

Now it is! :D

I found a newer version of the Canon service tool, version 2000. This version supports more printers and newer operating systems than the version 105 mentioned in post #8, that worked only with Win XP, according to the description.

I found a free download of this newer version from a Russian inkjet printer forum. I've tested it with an MP540, which is similar to the MP640, just a smaller model with smaller printhead and fewer features. Link to my post with download link and description/instruction: http://www.nifty-stuff.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=7416

I think the procedure for entering service mode is the same as for the MP540 used in my test. But when dealing with service mode operations do so at your own risk and be careful.
