Could you make a video with sound and upload it to a free file sharing site? There is no need to join Youtube. Here is a thread with links to a free file sharing service and examples of printer videos.
A video sounds like an excellent idea, but I'd have to say I'm not up to that skill myself. Thanks for thinking of me!

stratman,

I found the answer myself! It's my hearing aid! I'm still learning how to use it... it turns out that my settings were not well adjusted. On a hunch, I removed the ear pieces and this made a sizable difference. Earlier PeterPJ had suggested I upload a video clip and I think I can figure out how to do that. It's 37 sec long and measures about 3MB. This would be the version without hearing aid. I tried to reach Technical Support but I had trouble entering it, and decided to cancel that plan. I hope this does not violate my agreeing to post here my conversation with Canon. With the hearing aid the printer noise is very harsh, without it the noise is present but tolerable. My rifle sound was a poor analogy.

So - the solution is my fault and it didn't seem to make sense to involve the Canon Tech people.

Best regards,

Paul

Thank you for the feed-back. Glad to hear the printer is OK. Never mind about the video , it is not necessary as the printer is OK.

A visit with the hearing specialist might help to dial in the settings better or discuss switching to a different type of hearing aid. A conversation on "recruitment" and "hyperacusis" as cause for the unexpected loudness could be beneficial.

If using the telephone is an issue then there are hearing aids that work better when using phones.

I think your post is a wonderful one as you may be helping others experiencing similar situations. Thank you!

I have a pretty good audiologist (sp?)... I need to tell her about this episode! And as for "hyperacusis" - that's a new one for me. As for phones... if I understand my setup, I'm on phones most of the time. But it's time now for a checkup.

Thanks for your positive outlook on this post... passing the torch helps make it all worthwhile.

Regards,

Paul

And as for "hyperacusis"
So you know about "recruitment"?

passing the torch helps make it all worthwhile.
Your candor may help someone in the future recognize something they are experiencing and then see a medical professional. You never know where a revelation may happen. Thank you Paul!

"recruitment" I could make a kinda guess, but "hyperacusis" is out of my range!

This thread has turned out quite well, thanks all!

That Signia link contained some excellent source material... for example "hyperacusis" , the ailment that had me mystified.
