This pro 1 printer of mine has more pitfalls to it (A concealed hole in the ground that serves as a trap) than I could have ever imagined.

Yes its back working perfectly again and I am very happy about that but there is yet another hole waiting for me just down the road.

After all my trouble of fitting an external waste ink tank to the printer, which now works perfectly if anybody is interested,
I cant avail of this marvellous little device to control any of my wastage, I slope out but the counter continues.

When I got my printer back from Canon they deliberately changed/altered
the sequence on how to enter Service mode, because wait for it.

Quote Customers are not allowed to enter service more (Only Authorised Personal are),
so they took it apron themselves whilst they had my printer in their care to secretly alter these steps
so that I wouldnt be unable to enter service mode any more.

I would now say to anybody contemplating purchasing one of these printers that apart from changing the ink cartridges and loading in paper,
not to do anything else to the printer not even lift the top lid on it, otherwise the service Dept is just waiting on you if you do.:weee

This darn printer is one big money pit and if you get one, you too can have the privilege
of finding that out for yourself, its like feeding peanuts to an elephant.

I dared to take the covers from mine and that action costs me to lose control of everything inside the printer;
it was a complete total waste of time, now I wait for the waste ink to hit 80% (Another 12 Months)
and the dreaded skull and crossbones to appear on screen.

Full Stop... Take it to Canon Service for yet another reset and a whole new waste ink cartridge to be fitted,
will that cost a packet, of course it will..
At this time I am suppose to say Happy Printer but for how long :idunno

The question is how much room they have to change the code.

On the web I found that the way to enter service mode is as follows:

====
1. With the power cord connected and the printer power turned off, while pressing the Resume / Cancel button, press and hold the ON button. (DO NOT release the buttons.)

2. When the Power LED lights, while holding the ON button, release the Resume/Cancel button. (DO NOT release the ON button).

3. While holding the ON button, press the Resume / Cancel button 5 times, then release the ON button. Each time the Resume / Cancel button is pressed, the Alarm and Power LEDs light alternately.

The printer is ready for the service mode operation.
====

With my limited technical background, to me the only room for alteration seems to be in step 3, change the number of times the Resume button must be pressed.

Did you try to enter service mode with different values in step 3? Press Resume 1 time. If it doesn't work then try with 2 times, then 3 times etc etc. I'd go up to 20, 30 times.

You probably already tried this, but just in case...

That was the old way (Current) of entering service mode, but not anymore on my machine. :he
Thanks for the suggestion dough, and all other suggestions are very welcome too, one of them has to work. :ya

I have tried every button press to 14 and counting but none of them work,
its probably a variation or combination of the 5 button press series,
so long as I dont accidently get Defcon five.. :hide

You are not alone, read this thread http://www.nifty-stuff.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=8763

When one buys their printer they are investing their money to their business, and to change service mode codes, your tech support is even worse. Now that my customer got their money back, they also want to get money for ink they had to buy for the service center to to do their work.

Luckily laws forbid that, so they have an opportunity to ask politely or sue them to court (would take at lest 2-3 years). So I'm not optimistic here, but the printer was declared bad in Germany, so maybe some service center work OK, but most certainly not.

As much as I might jump up and down and pull what little hair out I have left that you have no choice
but to accept and agree with these sharp practices that are carried by the Canon service centres.

Its a sad fact that if you sent you printer to their Service agents they can do with it what they pretty much like
and there is not a damn thing you can do about it, they can even send it back to you still broken.

We do own the actual printer (Big black paperweight) but the coding (Software) inside that runs these printers
is still the property of Canon Inc. and thats where they got us all by the short and curlys.

Thats why it is vitally important when you have a perfectly good working printer
not to allow it on-line to either upgrade the firmware or avail of any print driver updates.

Another thing to note regarding Canon printers.

if you are installing another Canon printer, to add to your existing printer line up,
make sure you dont allow internet access to the Auto installer when installing the drivers for this new printer,
its ok to use Windows to locate and install these print drivers.

Can I ask some advice, does this thread's turn of events apply to me and my new Pro-100 if I manually refill my cartridges?

It sounds like Canon's service centres are hyper touchy about any modifications or third party ink use. I'm a new Pro-100 owner and hope I don't fall foul of any 'man traps'. I haven't turned ink monitoring off yet.
I've got a Precision Color kit on its way.

All of them! LOL
Not really. The Hat oppened up the Pro-1 in an attempt to locate the waste tubes and re route them externally. Upon reassembling everything he got an error he could not reset. SO off the service place it went.
The techs there obviously saw what had been done and they reset it but probably updated something so now he cannont enter service mode using the previous method.
You chould be fine refilling your carts. But you do know that you will have to disable your ink monitoring for each individual colors that goes empty. Everything you will need including full instructions and all details can be found in mikling's precision colors website.
If you ever want to bring back ink monitoring you will have to reinsert a brand new OEM cart / carts.
