Has anyone tried using this (or any) pigment ink in a dye-only printer (such as the Pro 9900 MK II) in pursuit of more neutral blacks and sharper text printing. Or is this just asking for trouble?
:) Yes TXAvi8tor it works fine ,as the Pro 9900 MK II uses pigment black in its CLI-8BK Black cartridge,
and no it wont cause you any trouble. ;)

The Hat,

I think this is terribly wrong: CLI-8BK uses dye ink. Only pigment in the PGI-5Bk cartridge, but the Pro 900 does not has this cartridge in it. Is it possible, yes, but you will need the right type of pigment ink. I once did a test using pigment ink in my Canon i9950 printer (same printhead as the Pro 9000) and it turned out to be work remarkably well, but the ink was not optimized for the paper, causing a easy rub off.

This is my test:

With the proper type of pigment ink you can use pigment ink in your Pro 9000, but you will search for refillable cartridges without the sponge in it and a mechanism in the cartridge that will continuously shake the ink during printing, lik the PGI-9 cartridges in the Pro 9500.

Thanks pharmacist for putting me right, I did get it wrong with the CLI-8BK didnt I. I knew that the pro 9000 was capable of pigment black but mistakenly taught it had the wide cartridge also. I hope this bit of humble pie with go down well with TXAvi8tor Ops.. :(

Hi, I am thinking of trying to refill my Canon MP760 after the print head just died- I have now purchased a new print head and I am a little nervous in using the ultra cheap cartridges that I was using when the last one went kaput (from a prominent Amazon.co.uk marketplace seller who sells very cheap Eastern European ink cartridges @ 7.99/set)- I am considering the fotorite set here but it is not clear that the black included is pigment ink, so I am considering your site also :D however there do not seem to be empty cartridges availiable and I am not sure the east european ones I have can be trusted for refilling- do you know where I can source refillable cartridges if I buy from your site, also can you explain what type of syringe would be needed for these cartridges- thanks!

Hi Hazelnut,

if you want to spare your printhead I suggest you do not buy refillable cartridges, but refill your original empty Canon cartridges. It will prevent you from a lot of headaches in the future and it saves you money which can be spent on good quality refill ink. Martin at octoink.co.uk sells the right types of needles and syringes for the german durchstich refill method: this method does not require sealing of the refill hole and is by far the most easiest way to refill these carts.

Hi pharmacist, unfortunately I don't have any original Canon cartridges, only these (yet unopened) sets of East European cartridges that I got from Amazon marketplace- since I am suspicious of the ink in them I don't really want to empty them in this new printhead, hence why the fotorite set is attractive to me as it includes new refillable carts, a whole new Canon set would cost 31, if I got those I might as well have bought a new printer....

Martin now also sells empty Canon carts for a few euro's and they are far superior to any refillable cartridges, because of its superior ink flow due to the double density sponge material. This concept is patented, so any aftermarket manufacturer (wether ready to use carts or refillables) will infringe this patented feature, when they will try to mimick this superior design and in the past there are some patent infringements, forcing the particular manufacturers to cease production using this technology, after having been sued by Canon. Still: 31 pounds is still not very cheap, because you pay for these refillables. Buy Image Specialists (Octoink.co.uk or Precisioncolors.com) ink for the BCI-6 series (MP760) and KMP-pigment black for your BCI-3eBK cartridge and you will be very happy with the results. Another good refill ink is Hobbicolors UW-8, which I use myself fo rmy Canon MX850 printer and is compatible for the BCI-6 as well. This ink produces very vivid results and most people like this vivid ink very much.

Yes I was planning on getting the KMP ink as I heard it was the best (although on the page it doesn't say BCI-3EBk is compatible I presume it is). I did have a hobbicolors set a few years ago but I found it a little difficult to use (screw tops) and had problems with leaking and the sponge getting clogged up.
