Hi - I was hoping to post an image of a test print I did recently after my IP5000 started printing striped images when using greyscale and black text - (prints fine on the colours) - BUT forum tells me I need to reduce the images I post to 0 - so a brief description of the test print is that the lower half of the 3eBk part is completely missing (definitely not faint or partial but not there at all) - all the others look ok (any advice how I could include image ?)

I've had it about 2.5 years & been refilling using Jettec inks for most of that time and recently swapped to C-EYE.

I've done the cleaning and deep cleaning on the 3eBk since the issue but the test print is the same - I haven't done anything more than that yet.

Can anyone advise from my description of the test print if it's terminal - obviously would like to avoid spending time trying to fix it if it is - if there is a possibility of fixing it perhaps you could point me in the right direction ?

If it's not fixable is it possible to get the printer to print using the other smaller black cartridge for black printing so at least I can get it to function while I sort out a replacement.

I've managed to get along very happily with these non-chipped cartridges and was hoping I could get another printer off ebay (or perhaps a print-head if that's what it needs) but from what I read here (and see on ebay) getting a printhead or another printer using these cartridges in good nick looks unlikely.

So if I do need to scrap this one - anyone care to suggest a few printers (or cartridge types) that are easy to refill as running costs are key for me - I'm not that worried about print quality or speed and not married to Canon tho this is what I've had for the last 6 years simply so I can keep using the same cartridges.

The later canons appeal - is it possible to do hassle free refills in the later Canons using the chipped PGI5/CLI8 cartridges (using the simple method that's worked on my IP5000 - i.e. putting a hole in OE cartridge, syringing in ink and re-sealing) and just ignore any "empty" etc messages or is it more complex than that and one has to use a resetter. Or maybe compatible chipped cartridges work for these printers - as I've read a lot on forums saying chipped compatibles can cause a load of problems themsleves.

Any help much appreciated.

We really need to see your image of a nozzle test or a service test print to help you out.

This forum has a 24-hr waiting period for new users to post images in order to control malware and spam. Please try again later....we may recommend other actions beside scrapping your printer.

Your description sounds like an electrical problem in the print head which will require a replacement.

In the meantime, just tell your printer that you are printing on matte photo paper and it will use the small black cartridge. In fact, since you are refilling, you can continue to use your printer this way until something else happens.

Many thanks for your help - changed to matte photo paper and now have a working printer - excellent !

Is there any way I can speed up the print speed when I print this way - I tried reducing quality but anything less than standard was greyed out ?

Will try to upload test print image shortly.

Instead of matte paper, try Photo Paper Plus Glossy in draft mode. For a half page of text this took 28 seconds compared to 40 seconds for matte on my iP4000. It uses less ink as you can see that it is slightly less dark. In standard mode it was just as dark as matte but took only 34 seconds.

Thank you - tried what you say and yes a bit faster - so will use this. I tried setting the photo paper plus glossy as the default but looks like plain paper is the default and can't be changed ?

Have uploaded test print image ok and have copied the image link from the upload page into this reply but as no image appears (all I see is the text link as I type this) I suspect the picture won't be visible in this reply - am I missing something about the upload process ?

Anyway thanks for all the helpful input ?

You image uploaded fine. It appears you do need a new printhead.

You can continue to use your printer as ghwellsjr suggested till you can find a new print head.

To set your printer to default glossy paper permanently go into your control panel and select your printer there,
and when youve made your paper changes just click apply and you wont have to do that anymore to print..:)
