How to repair Canon Purge Unit

I looked to buy your manual on Ebay but I assume they are long gone.
I have the exact problem you described with a purge unit on an IPF605 (gears are misaligned) and nobody knows how to repair it. (I'm in Toronto Ontario, Canada)
Do you still sell your manual, if so does it cover this?

@Andrewcdi, you wouldn’t want to hold your breath waiting on @Trigger 37 to answer, he has not been here in over twelve months, but miracles do happen.

As far as your problem goes, you should examine the whole area carefully around the mis-aligned gears and see if you can spot the reason why they jump out of position.

Once you have the cover off your printer your half way there to fixing your issues, you will have to remove some parts to fix the problem but if they are the gears that are driving the purge unit you will also have to remove that for servicing.

It’s not as hard a job as you might thing most of the screws need to be removed are very visible, so you will have to take your time and do it very slowly, and patience is a great partner to have when you do these jobs.

The one thing you might not have taught of doing is to take as many photos as you can and you dissemble that side of the printer, and the purge unit itself is just straight forward and not that difficult to understand.

ok - So, I got down to the nitty-gritty, got the purge unit out, snapped the gear back in, reinstalled it and this is what happened.

Anybody that can comment on what is going on here and ideas on how to fix it would be greatly appreciated!

I'd say something is really hard to turn. You need to find out why...

The Canon IPF605 Purge Unit has been repaired successfully and the error has cleared.

Turns out the lubricant that was used on the purge unit had turned into a tar like substance. My fingers actually stuck to the stuff. I used a bit of light machine oil to break it down until it freed up while cycling it manually. Put it back it, restarted it once to clear the code and then it booted up successfully.

Does anyone know a good source for ink cartridges for this?

It’s not to wise to use machine oil on your purge pump, all the parts are plastic so its unnecessary, now for ink for your carts you can use a guy just down the road from you: - http://www.precisioncolors.com/c5bbulk.html

OK its Toronto but its close, their inks will work perfectly fine in your machine, I have used them in the same carts and they are much cheaper than OEM, you can also get chips from Alibaba if you don’t want to run without ink monitoring...

The service manual linked to by The Hat can also be downloaded, so I checked it. Page 4-47 has a table that suggests the use of Molykote PG-641 for most lubrication points. It is expensive, but maybe Molykote EM-30L can be used as a lower priced substitute? It is a white grease that is safe for plastics and contains no silicone.

I have used the Molykote EM-30L successfully on more modest Canon and HP printer models for home use.
