Error 005 indicates that the printer is not recognized by the PC. The Service tools only work with a USB connection, so the use of a USB cable is mandatory even if the printer has wireless capability. It is also important that only the printer you want to do service mode operations on is connected to the computer, no other printers must be connected to the computer when doing service mode operations.
If you haven't used your printer with a USB connection, this must first be installed before you can use the service tools. The easiest way is to connect the printer to the computer via USB and turn it on. Windows Update will then search for and supply a driver for the printer. After the install is complete turn of the printer and enter service mode.
Error 006 indicates that the printer has not entered service mode or is not supported by the service tool.
The procedure for entering service mode is different for different printers. Some printers require the stop/resume button pressed twice, others 5 times, but I have also seen the numbers 4 and 6 times mentioned. The procedure for entering service mode is found in the service manual for the printer, but the service manual for this printer is nowhere to be found, so you will have to try different procedures. The MG5540 is a new generation printer using the PGI-x50/CLI-x51 cartridges, and no info about service tools and service mode operations for these new printers has been posted on the forum.
Here is a post with a list of service tool error messages.
Here is the procedure for entering service mode for the MG5220. The same procedure might apply to your printer. I have edited the instruction slightly to make it more clear:
The newest versions of the service tools support the most printers, so version 3400 or possibly the version 3600 is recommended. The newer version of service tools support all Windows versions from XP and on, both 32 and 64 bits. The service tools only work with Windows, MacOS and Linux are not supported.
Here is a post with the newest links to service tools. And here is a link to version 3600. This version is only partly translated from Chinese (?), so if anybody has a link to a better version, please post it.
I hope this helps.
