Have you ever tried to report a landline fault in the UK?

I suggest you write to them or start recording what is said on the phone otherwise if it comes to a point where complaints are run further up the food chain and even to the ADR i mentioned phones calls and who said what are easily denied. More so by them.

It's still illegal to record telephone calls but you can always say it’s for training purposes..:gig

That is a good one Brian!!

Today I did have an email from them, suitably apologetic, but no real information.

The local rumour is some four to five hundred lines have been affected in a major outage for this area and engineering staff are remaking all the connections.

It happened in the middle of the night, 0420am, a week last Thursday/Friday. Who is working in the middle of the night? Or was it a lightning strike?

Strangely I cannot find any mention on the various websites that report significant outages nationwide.

Not if you inform them you are recording the call from the start and point out the reason why (thats how companies get away with it with the "for training purposes" line), in emulators case because more than likely if he wants this fixed its gonna have to be taken higher, especially if who he is phoning is some overseas call centre. He is not going to get anywhere with them following a script and sending the odd generic email.

This morning I checked the phone and found a dialling tone which when tested allowed out going calls. Checking incoming calls proved a failure and no internet available. So some progress.

I dunno about giving them hell lol but yeah im with the @The Hat if you now have the ability to make outgoing calls, email and call them daily (especially if it is a freephone number). Letting things slip and only calling them or emailing once a week or a longer period will have them just ignore you. Also lodge this as a formal complaint see it is passed up the food chain (or should be passed up). Some call centre workers will just repeat the same script over and over so its important to get above and beyond that stage.

It has turned out that the outgoing line has an incoming line as well. Calling someone, they noticed that my call was not coming from my normal number and they noted the new number. This works for incoming calls as well, though no broadband!!

A kindly neighbour is allowing me to use his router guest facility for broadband.

You should report that, a different number indicates you are connected to a different set of pairs at the cabinet or exchange. It will also mean billing errors both for the person that now has your old number and for your which has the new number (do not be shocked if the next phone bill you have has loads of calls on it to numbers you have never heard of).

You will need to report this new issue to them. They should in turn contact Openreach to rectify the problem. This is not something that will fix itself.

There are around 400 lines that have been taken out in this area and Openreach, bless their socks, have been working hard to deal with the work. In my opinion this line has been provided for emergency cover. My calls would be going to their bill not the reverse, but I think it was a vacant line, we have had no calls. My own number does not respond. I am not as pessimistic as you are!!:D

However, I have reported the problem to the provider as you suggest and they are investigating.
