GOING THROUGH PRINTER HELL-Need recommendation on 8.5 x 11 art printer

Glad to find this place

I am in a situation where I need to print about 120 (8.5 x 11) full color art prints (on Folex Canvas Jet ST paper) once a week.

- Does not have to be "borderless" but close.
- Does not need to be archival. (The print only needs to look good for a few weeks.)
- Does not need to be "art photo studio quality"

Hence, I need a moderately high-volume ink jet printer -- that has gears that are good enough to withstand the weight of that heavy Folex inkjet canvas paper.

And it must be reliable enough such that I can enqueue 100 copies or so at night. Then go to bed. And wake up to see all my jpgs printed. (Note that each jpg will be the exact same dimensions, dpi, rotation, etc...)

I am currently spending $100's of dollars a month on ink. (Not to mention the fact that 30% of our prints manage to result in errors (of every kind).)

Can you guys help?



I'm out of brain cells and don't know anything about "InkJet Continuous Flow Systems" (but I think that's what I want to buy?)

I am on a serious low budget too. So cost is a biggie in this decision.

I see you desired paper has a weight of 300gm/sq, I wish they would specify the caliper (thickness) instead. That's a MUCH better specification to select an inkjet. Can you please measure it?

Going through the manufactures website, the following Canon Printers are "compatible"...but are somewhat incompatible with CIS systems. Epsons appear better for reliable CIS systems (since they use a piezo printhead rather than a thermal printhead. MANY Epson printers are compatible as well. If you are printing that much, either a CIS system or several sets of refilled carts will DRASTICALLY lower you ink costs by a least two orders of magnitude.

You will probably have an interruption in printing if you run unattended, as ALL newer printers count the dots sprayed, and calculate the "end of ink" in a cartridge (whether using a CIS or a refilled or OEM cart), and then will stop printing until you change the cart. Then the carts (refilled or part of a CIS will need a "reset" to continue. You will have to determine the interruption point for yourself.

You certainly have a very big wish list which dare I say can be filled easily with either the right Epson or Canon printer.

Thats the easy bit out of the way, now for you to manage a continuing reliable print run weekly thats the hard bit,
quality and reliable printers costs that little bit more.

You wont do it on a limited budget thats for sure so youre out of luck on the low cost route big time.

If you want a CISS printer go for an Epson with matching CISS or get them already together as a single unit (married)
as I say it wont be cheap whichever way you choose to go.

Then there is the Canon printer it works best using two sets of OEM cartridges which you can refill yourself easily, again your choice.

Both of these choices will work for you depending on your level of confidence and experience with inkjet printers,
if it was my choice and please remember its not then I would choose the Canon route.

I have very little experience of the newer Epson printers and their capabilities so my choice is limited to Canon only,
so take it with a grain of salt but may I say a Canon will do what you want and more with no difficulty.

Choose wisely or youll end up with a printer that has failed to live up to your expectations after it has let you down repeatedly.

Thanks - I have a brand new Epson Artisan 1440 here which has been a lot of trouble.
- when printing an all black page - the black fades at the point 75% down the page. e.g. I get "banding" dont know why.
- Printer beeps 3 times and papers are rejected and feed through the printer as blanks - every 3 prints or so...

So I'm willing to try Canon that's for sure.

I have lots of knowedgable of photoshop and have owned inkjet printers for a decade. I'm also a programmer, so i'm fairly technically minded. I hope.

Any recomendations on a reliable company i can buy from? I'd prefer to just buy it all in one go.

As long as you currently get a good nozzle check to confirm your printhead works, I'd try...

It's not too big an investment....but you may have to modify the printer (cut out a notch somewhere in the lid to let out the tubes) to install the system.

I will probably call them
I am probably going to take my Artisan printer back to the store though. I have 5 days to get a full refund.

Problem is, when I insert Canvas into it, and print an all black page, I get "banding" on the print.

This does not happen with other paper -- e.g. glossy photo paper.

It appears the weight of the canvas and the orientation of the paper in the final stages of printing, results in a distance from the print head that is too far off the mark....?

This does not happen on my HP.

So I need a more "canvas-friendly" printer.

Suggestions welcome!

What paper settings are you using? Have you tried other paper setting in the printer's driver? If you are using the wrong one (too low a quality), you will experience "banding". Try them all, starting with "telling" the printer you are using "Epson Presentation Matte"....
