Going from Canon OEM to Octoinkjet ink on pro 100s

Hi everybody,

My first post here I have a question about the best way to switch from Canon Oem ink to Octoinkjet v2 ink.

1.Right now, my black cartridge is on it's first warning of running low, could i just replace the black OEM cartridge with the Octoinkjet pre-filled cartridge and continue printing? or is it a bad idea to have both OEM ink in some cartridges and Octoinkjet ink in some?

2.When i change the yellow Canon OEM cartridge to the yellow Octoinkjet cartridge do i have to do something to prevent the Yellow jello problem in the printer head? Or can i just change the cartridge and continue printing?

3. I’m using spyder pro 5 and DisplayCAL software to calibrate my screen. And if I understand things right I can’t create my custom profiles for my Octoink and paper? So no custom profiles for my ink and paper. Is this a big problem?

You would need the SpyderPrint version - H/W and software - to do your own paper custom profiles.
The driver would offer you already various adjustments - color - contrast - brightness - if you think your prints - this ink with this paper - come with a color cast. You should start here to make corrections.

@Manuel Aspegren, welcome, firstly you can just change from OEM Black to Octo Black, and you should do that ASAP, you shouldn’t be waiting to empty the cart first, that’s a bad idea, change the carts when first showing low.

The Yellow cart is a different matter, but with Octo ink there shouldn’t be a problem to just refill it, but if you wish to play safe then run the yellow cart to empty and then flush the empty cart with window cleaner only till the sponge is clean, then rinse with water, dry, and reset the chip and refill.

You can continue to use what ever profile you are currently using to print with OEM inks and when you have refilled all your carts with Octo ink, then it’s time to make a profile for your new ink and paper, if you wish too...

1.Ok, So no problem running a combination of both OEM ink and Octoink then.
2.When the yellow OEM cartridge is empty i can just replace it with a flushed cli42 cartridge with Octoink, Not having to worry but the printer head? (Jello problem).
3.Idon't think i can make my on profiles with Spyder 5, Is the difference so big between Canon OEM ink and Octoink that you recommend custom profiles, if yes, where do i get tho's from? any recommendations?

Do your own test first, you may do a test print, the same image, with your current OEM ink set and then again with the new inks, and then compare. You have several options:

- you use the color adjustments of the driver to adjust the intensity of particular colors causing a cast/color shift, it could be that this approach just meets your expectations
- if you want to use a color profile you either do it yourself, with a package like SpyderPrint or
ColorMunki - some members here prefer the ColorMunki over the Spyder package
- or you can get a profile made by some service company offering such service, some suppliers of inks and papers offer such service as well
- or you use specific color profiles already done by some companies - some ink suppliers like Marrutt or precisioncolors sell refill inks and paper or refer to 3rd party papers and offer specific profiles for these ink/paper/printer combinations
-or you get your inks from a supplier which includes a free profile if you buy an ink set from them. so there are plenty of options for you, but don't try all steps at the same time. One decision point could be whether you would need more than one profile - you are using different papers at the same time,
change suppliers for inks and papers and like to experiment anyway - like the impact of driver settings onto the color output.

1. No problems
2. Flushed to completely white with a window cleaner containing ammonia.
3. For differences make a print and look whether you are confident. If you have not flushed all it may take some time till all old ink is out. Just print. For the best you will of course need specific profiles.

Regarding the flushing. I know I have to flush the cartridge. But what I meant was if there gonna be a problem in the printer head? When the Oem ink and octoink mixes in the printer head?
