The problem with written instructions or all for that matter is it hardly can cover all possibilities. The instructions are old now but the reason for covering the vent holes was to prevent the breathing holes from getting blocked with refill ink. That would create a worse problem for the initial german refiller than some bubbling at times at the outlet....so I chose to with the safe method and that was to prevent the breathing channel from getting blocked. So in the end, the refilled cart would always work. I could then sleep. With the breather channel unblocked....you'd depend on the the refiller to know what to look for.

The experienced german refiller could miss that step as I would think that they'd keep an eye on if ink was going down there. With the opaque carts, the newbie would not pick up whether ink was headed down there or not.

I have no problems with downloading the PDF from mikling. I am using Windows 8.1 64 bits and Firefox v31.0. My download speed is rated at 60 Mbit/second. Using a stopwatch I found that the PDF downloaded in 4.79 seconds.

...apparently the sealing of the air vent covers my issue very well...

My attempt to explain: the sealing can cause a better sucking from the bottom of the sponge as the air has to exchange only through the ink outlet. An open air vent could increase the sucking into the upper sponge, leaving the lower unsufficiently saturated.

For my old BCI's this seems to be very helpful (see my post #60) ...if german refilling works without sealing - be happy (as I am with refilling CLI's that are in daily use)

Upper sponge saturation with ink in the CLI-8 cartridge is a non-issue. If there is a problem then it is something else.

I do not recall reading about of sealing the air vent when using the Durchstich method before you posted it. There are only a handful of methods to refill cartridges but there are personal nuances we each introduce into the process that may be unique and affect outcomes. If your method works and you are satisfied then do not change a thing no matter what anyone says!

EDIT:
The PDF PeterBJ links to on Precision Colors is not labeled for the CLI-8 cartridges, not that that may be of significance.

Same OS and browser.

Web site downloading better today but still slow. This is not software or hardware related on my computer. This issue is occurring between my ISP and Mikling's.

EDIT:
Sheesh! Now this forum is running slow. Other web sites of no problem. What's going on?
