I skipped from the first page to the last page of the thread. Didn't take long. I gave up refilling two years ago. I now have lot more time to do productive work, like messing around with 3D printers

It was the MX925 I've just ditched that finally persuaded me two years ago. I'd used some refillables from a reliable source that unfortunately proved to be sub standard. I had to replace the MX925 print head and decided to stop refilling and use good quality compatibles instead. Now the print head has gone for the second time. Presumably the logic board was damaged previously.

The Maxify looks to be so cheap to run with compatibles that I won't feel tempted to start refilling again.

I hope I don't get thrown out this forum

I also stopped refilling Canon dye ink consumer printers, since IMO (and I am not alone) they have a short programmed life, whether you buy OEM ink or refill (with the additional disadvantage that all refill ink fades within a few months).
First of all, pigment ink - also refill - is much more resistant to fading.
Second, the printers are targeted to advanced amateurs and (home) offices, so Canon cannot make them fail too soon.
I agree you better refill because you like it and not only for economic reasons.
The advantage of being thrown off the forum is that you won't be forced to read my next thread: "My Pixma PRO-10 is on refill ink" .

The Maxify 5150 has a default ECO setting to switch off after 4 hours. With previous Canon printers, I suspected that frequent powering up and down increased the number of cleaning cycles, and I avoided doing this. I'm tempted to turn off the auto power down on the Maxify.

Does anyone have any comments?

I am using and refilling Canon printers for some time and stopped worrying about cleaning cycles.
The ink is cheap and I still have too see my first printer with full inkpads. They will be obsolete (=no more spare printheads) long before.
My printers are in ECO mode or quiet mode (seems to let the printhead cool better) and I switch them off when not in use (= at night for the Maxify, after a certain time for my photo printers).
Tried automatic nozzle checks etc but saw no advantage whatsoever.

For my photo printers I change of coarse the whole set when one cart is empty.

The Maxify is another beast, it has an ink flow sensor and decides cleaning itself.
I let it do, since @The Hat reported a waste ink reservoir of about 1 liter (for the 1500 carts version, maybe the 2500 is even larger)?

My Maxify turns on automatically when a print job is sent to it, and turns off ½ hour afterwards, that seems to work for me… No issues and it cleans whenever it wants..

@The Hat Did you dismantle a Maxify to determine this?
