Fading remedy

Dear All,

Looking through the forum I could not find a precise response to my question.

I have 2 printers with 250/251 cartridges. I refill them with Inktec, which is considered to be a well known brand for refilling purposes. Photos are nice when newly printed but they fade fast..

I understand that all well known ink brands used to refill cartridges (except for original Canon and may be Fuji inks mentioned in this forum as an alternative) fade more or less in the same time under the same conditions.

Questions:

Which is the best way to reduce the fading phenomenon if I keep using Inktec? I intend to hang the photos on a wall. I have a large metal board on the wall and secure the photos with magnets.

Some sort of spray? If so which brands work best?

Some sort of plastic film applied on each of the photos before hanging them on the wall? If so, which kind of plastic film?

other ideas?

that's tests with Epson compatible inks, the choice for Canon users for a fade resistant ink is almost nil, you may go for pretty expensive Fotonic XG inks by Lyson or you use genuine Chromalife Canon inks.
To improve the situation somewhat you should use a photo paper of the PE RC type, resin coated with a polyethylene barrier on both sides of the paper, that's papers which don't have a paperlike touch on the back and you cannot write on the back side with a ballpoint pen. And you can use some surface protection like lamination or a spray, lacquer, varnish, somebody even is using clear car paint for that purpose.

I will have a look on the photo paper mentioned above. Do you have an idea how efficient it would be?

Does anyone know which method is better and could provide details on it (lamination, spray, etc.)?

I'm showing some results in my thread mentioned above, you never will reach the performance of a good ink on a good paper with Inktec inks + lamination or sprays; since you have addtional cost and handling for those measures on an ongoing base, for every print and you rather may look for alternatives like switching over to a printer with pigment inks like the Pro10(s) or Pro 1000 if you want to stay with Canon and fading of your prints is your concern.

Agree, I lost a lot of time with the Canon dye printers.

Since the gloss differences with 3th party pigment inks are not a big problem anymore, I print all my photos on (Canon) pigment printers.
I am crossing fingers, but until now I also had less (or no) clogging issues compared with the dye machines.
Find a second hand Pro10 (or even a 9500 MkII), all that can (and will) break is the printhead and it costs you only the price of one refill with Canon ink.

Thanks. Agree. We invest a lot of time and money in the dye printers but if it is not possible to mitigate the fading problem there isnt any sense in it.

Pro 10 and its inks are not easily available ourside the EUA and EUR. What would be the other well proven alternatives (adaptations and other brands)?

There is a new printer from hp. It is a hp gt 5822. It is a pigment printer. It has tanks. It works with four colours (bcmy). It is a very simple machine but could be a dedicated photo one if its output is reasonable.

Does anyone have experience with it?

@Celso, If you have a problem getting 3rd party inks, why don’t you email Ross Hardy at inkjetcart they may be able to ship inks to Brazil, another alternative to the HP would be a Maxify printer, it has pigment inks and large cartridges and prints up to A4 size, but still a great printer...
