Smile,... OK,.. I'm sorry the link did not work as expected. The link takes you to the Canon support page and the first block on that page is there "Ask the knowledge Base as Question". So type into that box the question, "How to order replacement parts". It will bring up the directions.

The short answer is just call Canon at 1-800-828-4040 and ask for the Parts Department.

I can not vouch for their prices being cheaper for all printheads, I just know that for the basic iSeries printers, of everyone from the i550 up to the i960, Mp700, MP730, they are clearly cheaper. I've also purchase just about every other kind of part from them, such as purge units, timing strips, covers, input trays, output trays, etc. I have not had to purchase a logic card as of yet. I know those are going to be expensive. I tend to try and get them some other way.

By any chance if you ever order IP4200/MP500 printhead from them before? Any idea how much would it cost to order from them? I am from oversea and I am afraid of calling where the line keep holding.

If you have experience order IP4200/MP500 printhead from them, hope you let me know how much. You may email to let me if it's not appropriate to post here.

lin,... I'll call them tomorrow and ask about it. I just happen to have about 12 iP4200's that need repair, and I can ask them about other parts.

lin,, I called Canon today and they were very helpful. The ip4200 printhead is $33.49 plus shipping = $41.87. I will bet you will not find this price on a guaranteed printhead anywhere. When you say you are overseas... Canon has phone number in all countries. Go to their web site and pick a country.

Smile,... You must not be using the link the way I intended. Anyway, I don't think it matters since you need both the purge unit (they don't sell the sensor separately) and the logic card. These two parts will cost you way more than a new printer. Staples has all kinds of good sales on Canon printers. I'm putting up a couple of excellent iP4200 on ebay this week. They are better in some ways than the ip6600D, and I have both. The Canon web site also has refurbished printers for sale. The logic card costs so much because no one ever buys one. Canon only has them for Warranty replacement.

To use the link I gave, go to the link and in the "Knowledge Base" section,.. type the question,..."Replacement Parts". The Canon Search engine will take you to a page where the first frequently asked question is, "How do I order Canon Parts". If you click on that answer it will take you to the page with the phone number. I could have just given you the phone number but I'm trying to teach you how to search for things rather than just ask someone else.

Thanks for the help, Trigger 37. I solved my F50 problem by getting another F50 off of Freecycle; it supposedly had a jammed cartridge message, but the only problem I found was ink on the - what do you call it? - clear plastic strip with tic marks that helps locate the head position. The head would stutter as it moved, particularly at one location, so maybe under certain circumstances it would get confused enough to jam, or think it was.

It appears that I blew up the drivers on the first F50, since the good head won't print at all on it (I did an ABAB test to make sure). Short of checking for a bad cable to the logic board, I presume there's no easy fix for this.

Before I got the second F50, I found an S520 at the local recycling center, but that one had head temperature problems. I tried cleaning it to see if that would resolve the temp error, but it returned, so I expect that I'll throw in the towel on that as well. It would have been nice to have a spare printhead.

Mission accomplished - neighbor in need has a working F50 and extra ink carts to replace a Lexmark with a paper feed problem - I think I'll go back to fixing laser printers and flat panels...

Thanks again,
Tony

tonym924,....Glad to hear you got things working,...but it sounds like you put a lot of effort into the project. Good Work.

I've never heard of "Freecycle". What is it.

On the S520 with the head temp problem. Don't ever put that head in another machine to test it. It probably has a shorted section of nozzles and that can burn out the drivers on the logic card. The newer machines have current limiting function built into the power supply that helps prevent shorts but I don't believe it is a 100% design.

Yes, I made some service test prints on the S520, and copied down the register settings from the F50, thinking that I would decode them, but then decided that I didn't have the bandwidth (and the other F50 came along...).

Freecycle is a network of local mailing lists (some are Yahoo groups) that post offers and requests for free items. http://www.freecycle.org has a search function for finding the closest group(s). It's like the free section on Craigslist, but more structured.

Another tip: office supply stores offer $3 credit on certain cartridges. OfficeMax has the best deal locally, as they will redeem 5 carts per day (but they have to be HP, Lexmark, or Dell). Staples will take 3 per day (as coupons). Office Depot will redeem 25 per day, but you can only use 3 of the coupons per day. Since the Canon ink tanks are <$15, I was able to get the replacements I needed without fronting cash for them.

tonym924,... I hate to tell you this but you should never give your empty ink carts to any of those places. You can keep them and clean them and reuse them for yourself. If not that then you can sell them on eBay. They only let you do three a day, so that you will buy a new cart for $15 or $25 depending on the cart. The they turn around and sell or refill those carts themselves and sell them as remanufactured ink carts.

The ink cart industry is the biggest scam since the pirimids letters. Here is another very sad story,... many of these recycle stores have "Conned" grade schools into having all the children go out into the community and beg for empty ink carts, used cell phones, etc. They do this from the 1st grade to the 7th grade. Then 4 times a year the schools put on a massive drive and the kids go to all their relatives, friends, etc, begging for ink carts. Once the shcool gets them collected, the recycle store sends them one or two very large boxes with prepaid shipping so that all the ink carts are returned to them for free. The inspect the ink carts and through away ones they don't want to refill or can't, and any that look defective. What is left they pay the school $0.10 each. They then clean and refill these ink carts and sell them as re-manufactured at $10 to $25 each. The ink costs them about $0.30 per ink cart.

If you would go to their web site they advertise this as they are saving the "Worlds Childern" by helping them earn money to pay for school supplies, books etc. If you look at the economics, the school would make 30 times more for each ink cart if they just sold them on eBay. My anger with this is that they feed their business using kids, and if the schools had a brain at all they would make them pay a fair price for the ink carts. Without the ink carts, they would not have a business.
