So here is what I discovered it looks like if I leave the CISS plugs at tank top completely out of CISS for black it will do a good nozzle check, but I do notice the black coming out more smudge like and heavy like bold in prints. But it lasted for longer then 24 hours. But as soon as I put the plug back in the black it went back to bad nozzle immediately and I could see air in the lines.

So my suspicion is that perhaps I have similar problem as shpitz with some leak letting air into CISS line. I will check the bottom of CISS tanks and look at black outlet tube but not sure what I should be looking for. I assuming the plugs should be left in that is creates the perfect pressure system the CISS needs but with them open it alleviates the problem but is not ideal or correct way to operate it.

2 cleanings have not got me a clean nozzle check even with plug out on black. Wonder if I need to do more to flush out the air.

I do recall trying to get those tiny plugs off the damper carts when I had to prime it a long while back and tried using a push pin to get grip on it since it was on really tight and hard to get under with pliers. Perhaps I pierced a small hole in this cart plug and that is where it takes in air. I suppose I could switch the cart plug from one color to another after cleaning it up good and see if the moves the black issue to another cart.

LJH any thoughts?

I returned tonight to printer and black failed nozzle check again, so I decided to switch plugs on damper cart from another color. So I decided to prime the black and found that the damper had tons of air in it. I took almost 2.5 full syringe of air from damper before getting significant ink draw. So there is definitely some air infiltrating the black.
It then took 3 cleaning cycle to prime the feed tubes leading to the print head.

I put the plug back in at top of tank for black. But since its now pressurized I expect it to take in air faster and fail the nozzle check much quicker. Also I did not see any issue at bottom of tank where tube connects for black and no constrictions on the tubing.

Leonard, is it possible to just purchase a new damper for your Deluxe CISS and its tube and just transfer chip from old black and connect to CISS tank? Or perhaps I can just terminate the CISS black and just throw a black artisan refillable.

Hi Jeff

If you punctured the service plug and your ciss is below your cartridge height you could induce air to your system..

If your poppet valve is not making a good seal at the cap assembly you could induce air to your system..

I can send you a replacement black ciss cartridge at no charge...Your model does not come with a damper...

External damper is a one way valve that closes when printer stops printing..We only use these on select regions of great temperature ranges.. Expansion and contractions..

With the artisan style printer you can just elevate the ciss taking out the expansion part of the equation. Let gravity feed the cartridge..

Elevate ciss, check for leaks, service plug, elbows, ink tubes,,ect...

In 2011 you had an issue with the lid not closing, this would indicate excess plastic at the lid, causing a constriction or and a possible breach of the ink tube if left in this condition...No pressure on the ink tubes is preferred...

Regarding plugs they should like this

Large plug in, small plug on the right

Everyone should buy their stuff from Leonard. This fine gentlemen service is first class. He made many suggestions to me to try and determine root cause of my black issue. The best idea was removing the CISS tube to the cart to eliminate that from the equation. At first it seemed liked this fixed my issue. When all it did was extend the time of failure out an extra day. So basically it turned out to be something with the printer causing black to clog heads and begin to fail nozzle check. I tried everything with this printer - soaking the heads in cleaning solution, flushing the head inlet nozzles, cleaning the capping station. Nothing seemed to help except for temporary of maybe 1-2 days and then back to failed nozzle check.

I am going to be sending the Artisan 710 to the junk heap and getting a Artisan 1430 since I need the CD/DVD printing feature. Now I need to decide if to go with CISS or just refillable carts. I am so spoiled with the CISS and the ease of adding ink to a CISS. But I hear CISS on the 1430 can get a bit complex. So since I am buying a new printer that will have warranty out of box, then I likely don't want to mod it and will likely lean towards refillable since I assume the CISS requires some cover modes of something of nature that makes it difficult for CISS.
