Epson 1430: noise when opening or shutting front panel. Normal?

I just now set up my 1430, it's been in storage, carts had been filled with Piezoflush. Now I have ink in the carts and ran some test prints. My 1400 never did this so maybe this is just a difference with the 1430. Sometimes the noise is the printer carriage moving to the other end and back, sometimes not.

Is this normal for the 1430? I hope it's not serious.

a clarifcation: in this phrase, "My 1400 never did this..." by "this" I mean the noise.

Well, I have some disturbing news. I remembered that a friend has a 1430, in fact I helped her buy it. We found one on Epson's refurb site. Went over to her house just now and tried out her printer. When I open the paper exit panel, her printer doesn't make a bit of noise, the cartridge carrier doesn't move. It sits quietly waiting for me to begin a print.

Now what?

Actually, my 1430 seems to be printing fine. I ran a few test prints and they're quite good. So, friends tell me why worry? If it prints, why should I care about a little noise and carriage movement when I'm opening and closing the paper exit panel if I get a good print?

I admit to being somewhat of a perfectionist. I like things to work the way they're supposed to.

Yes, my 1430 continues to print... but that's with a sheet of paper in the tray at the back. But when I tried printing a DVD, the DVD/CD tray would not insert all the way, only about halfway. I didn't want to force it. I noticed when I opened the DVD/CD panel, it would make no noise at all. A member of another forum told me that's when I should expect some noise of the head settling in.

So, to sum up:

> printer silent when opening the DVD/CD whereas opening the main outer front panel makes the noise that I should hear when I open/activate the CD/DVD panel.

Hard to explain all this, please tell me if you need further explanation. It's as if the two functions got reversed.

I should tell you I had a tech install my Printer Potty and he made an error in the process. The tubing he installed got pinched and some ink spilled on the insides. Is it possible the ink may have spilled on some electronics and caused some mixup on the commands to the panels?

Tricky question... I'd be looking more at mechanical interference but I'm painfully aware that I've not looked at a Photo 1500W (the 1430 equivalent here in Europe) in years so I could be way off base. As the paper tray is in proximity to the CD/DVD tray I wonder if the issue is a catch/lever has been knocked out of alignment/position and is cause the issue..

Fitting the waste kit shouldn't have affected anything as it's out of the way of most of the electronics and mechanics but it may well be worth checking where the ink spill went...

BTW, I started two threads... same printer but different issues. I tried to follow the "one topic per thread" rule, but this time the two issues seem to have merged into one. So look at that discussion, too.

Anyway, somewhere I mentioned that a) in the sheet of paper mode, the door made a noise opening and also closing. A friend's 1430 was quiet. And b) in DVD/CD mode the tray wouldn't allow inserting a disk more than halfway, and wouldn't print just a plain sheet of paper. I mentioned it was if two modes were swapping behavior. It turned out this was the case. My printer repair guy noticed this behavior and discovered that two cables were reversed when originally plugged in. So he swapped them back and voilà. This 1430 was a refurb... could someone have overlooked this?

I can't find where a member here suggested the two modes were reversed too, and I apologize for not recognizing that individual.

To top it off, my repair guy didn't charge me! Said he should've checked all functions when he finished the first job (finding a kink in the tube to a Printer Potty).

Somewhere I noted the possible swapping of the two modes, printing a sheet of paper and printing on a DVD or CD. Actually someone else somewhere mentioned this too and my apologizes to who over that was for not mentioning him/her. And see my other thread, "linked ink inside a printer" for more. I started two threads, on different subjects, trying to follow the "one topic per thread" rule.

This two mode diagnosis turned out to be the case... my computer/printer repair guy noticed the printer's behavior also and then simply swapped two cables that had been reversed. Now it works like a charm!

Plus, the frosting on the cake, he didn't charge anything! Said he should have tested all functions before releasing the printer back to me... that was when had un-kinked a Printer Potty tubing, that had caused ink puddles under the printer. I was happy the spilled ink turned out not to be culprit.

So, as I said in the other thread, all's well that ends well. Thanks to all!
