Could it be that there are three key components in play here, 1) a cheap ENTHUSIAST printer 2) cheap (LOST LEADER) paper that carries a humungus profit premium, so can be discounted to apparently silly levels and still turn a profit!!! ......EQUALS.................OOPS we need ink to make this picture complete...come in suckers..

The current economic state of Japan, after many years of decline, deepening recession, may be causing all sorts of desperate measures to secure North American currency, if that is where the debts lie. Has anyone asked Canon?

It is really difficult to work out where this is coming from, but more where it is headed @Emulator makes a good point.
The 3000 is maturing in the market place, and by all accounts, not going so good. The savvy users are nursing their printers, and tell anyone that will pay attention, what they need to do to keep the printer on track.
I am in hopes that the Canon 100 & 10's dont do a similar nose dive.
Fact is Epson is getting a thrashing from users in social media for the lack of durability of their wide format offering, Canon are getting a free run there, (it seems)..........so the question really is what ARE the Japanese giants up to.
I suspect that corporate social custom prevented these mega big Corporations from making intenal changes. Their Executives eyed the share price and revenue bottom line and opted to cut quality, research integrity and betrayed the core values established in grander times, before the bubble bust........well thats my thoughts on it from under the foil hat.

Getting back tot he OP topic at hand, 9 for 1 paper offer, that no longer exists. I just spend 25 minutes on the phone with a very polite and helpful rep, but there is no more 9for1 available. And if you look at the URL for that page, you can read into it a start and end date, which is 12/2. While I had him on the phone I tried three different browsers to make sure it wasn't pulling from the cache.
