I had a quick look to this new i1Studio version - without the ColorMunki spectro, x-Rite is apparently bringing their software packages - Colormunki and i1Profiler - closer together, this new update very much looks like the i1Profiler user frontend - the layout, the symbols, the sequence of profiling steps, parameter entry etc - even graphics and symbols are the same and most likely the actual profiling engine running in the back of all those windows. The software is crippled in its functionality, choice of instruments you can connect, layout and number or color patches and more options which are available in i1Profiler. I think the special mode to create profiles for B/W printing takes away lots of problems user are faced with otherwise - special inksets, colour casts etc. And this module is not available in the current i1Profiler version, it may come with the next update

I had a go profiling the scanner, but could not correctly follow the instructions (or understand some of them). It tells me it has created the profile, but it is nowhere that I can find it, not in the "color" folder where it should be. Some of the instructions (see below) are all very well, but where is "the screen on the right", I could not find it. The target seemed properly cropped, the scanner color management etc. was disabled, and I don't think the scanner has Unsharp Mask. All a bit exasperating.

Instructions:
After saving your profile, the screen on the right will display the average delta E of all patches, the average delta E in gamut and the percentages in and out of gamut. If your average delta E number is high (>3), check the following:
  • Is the target properly cropped? If not, reposition the crop marks and rescan the target.
  • Are the scanner software color management and auto adjustment settings disabled? If these settings are enabled, the dynamic range of the target will be shifted. Disable these settings and rescan the target.
  • Is Unsharp Mask disabled in the scanner software? Image sharpening is only permissible if done in the luminance channel. Disable Unsharp Mask

Ref unsharp mask - which scanner are you using ? I checked my scanners - an Epson stand alone and one of the L382 combo printer have an unsharp option, in some extended settings, scanner software for a simple Brother combo does not have that option. Did you profile your scanner before - e.g with the Vuescan software ? Vuescan supports about every scanner on the market and offers as well profiling

Did the software confirm that it completed the proflie calculation ?

Thanks for taking an interest.

The scanner is an Epson V37, no I have not profiled it before, I am not sure in what form the software confirms it has completed the profile, it did imply that it had saved the profile, but it struck me that the statement was automated rather than verified.

Everything worked correctly when profiling the printer, so I expected success with the scanner, it probably requires more trial and error.

When I tried to profile my scanner, I indeed could see "the screen on the right" - but it said something like, "check this and that ... wrong chart colors ..?.. wrong cropping or resolution ..?.. " and therefor no icc was saved.
I have to say that I use a china made copy of "color checker" chart. But this did work already while using with the x-rite cc passport software to profile the camera.

PS. profiling with vuescan and an IT-8 target from Wolf Faust i had tried years ago, with mixed results, no advantage over standard settings without custom proofile.
Therefor I was curious to see what x-rite can do...

There is most likely a step in the process to hit a button 'Create Profile' at which time you or the software assigned a profile name . Can you find this profile file if you do a search for it under Windows on your system drive ?

I did a system drive search yesterday, but did not find the scanner profile. I will try the whole process again today, I think I need to be more careful on ensuring the generated scan file meets the specified requirements.

Incidentally as Martin says, I also used the X-rite color checker 24 patch card as the chart.

Standard folder for icc files in windows is
C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\color\

I called my (unusable)scanner profile "mp810-noCM_ColCh24chart",
and it was saved as "Scanner_mp810-noCM_ColCh24chart" in the folder described above.
So I have to correct myself, it was indeed saved, despite the warnings onn the right panel - but it turned out as unusable.

My first printer profiles with i1studio are the same trash at the same location...
...I would like to believe that the fault is in my workflow, not in the software itself...

Never give up Martin.:)

I have found my stupid mistake re the scanner profiling. When you open I1studio and click on "Scanner" the screen that opens has a great big I1Studio help screen in the middle of the operating window. This help screen can be removed and then you can see all the info that you need about loading and displaying your scanner images etc.

Makes all the difference!:)

Now I have just to find how I enter the profile name in the scanner software, not immediately obvious in the Epson software.

It seems that Epson do not provide a facility to store or associate the profile with the scanner software.

Epson suggest using, for example, Adobe Photoshop Elements to apply the profile adjustments to an image when printing etc and then, presumably saving the modified image as a new file, if you wish.

I.E. using someone else's software, to make up for their inadequacies. Or perhaps I am being unjust.
