If you have the cover off then see if you can find the source of the noise.
The purge unit could be snagging the bottom of the print head when it tries to move.
Remove the print head and cartridges then try it, something is causing the weird noise just observe the movement carefully.
Never mind the soldering bit thats only what I had to do to get mine to work.
I once had an i9950 and was sorry to lose it, so just keep trying..
